About this listen

Detective Mike Nash thought that moving back to Yorkshire from London would give him a quieter life. Little did he know....

Bones in the water

Two skeletons are discovered in Lamentation Tarn, a mountain lake. Talented detective Mike Nash and his team have little evidence with which to work, until a surprising discovery prompts them to contact law enforcement agencies in Eastern Europe.

A gripping, fast-paced mystery with some stunning twists

A joint task force is formed to uncover a criminal network involved in prostitution, drugs, and human trafficking, but Nash's preoccupation with internal politics, as well as with an attractive Russian detective, proves to be a distraction.

A breath-taking crime thriller perfect for fans of Ian Rankin, JD Kirk, DS Butler, or Peter Robinson

Finally, a young victim escapes the gang's clutches, providing Nash with much needed evidence. A search of the neighboring tarn yields evidence of even more heinous crimes. Who else will die before the criminals are brought to bitter justice?

"Curiosity killed the cat burglar."

At first this reader had read hopes for wHat Lies Beneath, a detective story based in Yorkshire following the trail of brutal child sex traffickers. But a combination of the lead character, D.I.Mike Nash, constantly declaring the inhumanity of sex offenders whist simultaneously flirting with and bedding most females he encounters as his girlfriend struggles to recover from previous injury (and this pursuit a standing joke amongst his colleagues) plus the awkward reading by narrator, John Lee - odd accents, hard to distinguish between protagonists - left me rather underwhelmed.

Some occasional nice one liners, though, like calling Mike Nash a 'hands on policeman '.

What Lies Beneath

At last the Mike Nash stories on audio! Wonderfully narrated . I really hope there will be more of Bill Kitsons brilliant stories!

Very transparent in places

A reasonably good storyline, but a bit far fetched in some parts. Terrible narration, spoiled it somewhat, but I would still read books by author Bill Kitson in the future.

The Misogyny

Narrator made it bearable. Police incompetence was amusing. Glad it was free and I was to poorly to find a different story

Not bad

Not a bad story and narration is good but I do wish Nash would keep his trousers on a bit more.

Dreadful narration

I disliked the narration so much, I bought the book. So I suppose that was a marketing success. Sadly, the book explains why there is no ‘gap’ or pause between change of scenes - because there isn’t any in the book either. I found the narrators accents not to be up the the standard I expect from audible (have a listen to the Harry Grimm books for a good Yorkshire accent) and it spoiled my enjoyment of what was a good (if far fetched - but this is a fiction book) plot. I sometimes wonder if it’s just me who despairs at the decreasing quality whilst prices keep going up? Either way, this was part of my audible plus as I would have returned it had I paid for it.

Good, well-paced story.

The story and the characters are well written with a gripping main theme and interesting development of plot. It combines aspects of a thriller with a police procedural who-done-it. It is well worth a listen.

However, the story is undermined in places by the editing of the recording and occasionally the narration. There is little or no pause between paragraphs and sections, so that one conversation or narrative moves seamlessly into a different passage with different characters and locations. It is very difficult to know which characters are talking and what is happening. This spoils the story in places. There are also some bizarre local accents attempted which are annoying to say the least.
Nonetheless, the story is worth listening to.

Awful narration

Sadly The story wasn’t strong enough to entice me to go past the 3rd chapter !

Just background noise

Not a very original story, blah blah. A very irritating narration. The two combined left me completely underwhelmed. I’d give this one a miss
