Summary

If you can't live with the truth, bury it....

Following a devastating encounter with a serial killer, Detective Inspector Freya Bloom is left mentally scarred. After a six-month sabbatical, and with no desire to return to the bustling London streets, she accepts a position in rural Lincolnshire in search of a slower pace of life.

But with London behind her, and a new life in the wild fens of Lincolnshire before her, she finds only endless drama in her new team, a tortured romance in her only ally, and crimes so deadly even the steely determination that drove her to success is tested.

From the moment Freya’s expensive heels hit Lincolnshire soil, the push-pull relationship with her sergeant begins. Noses are put out of joint, tempers are frayed, and more importantly, a body is discovered on a wild beach. There’s no time to make friends. If Freya is to make her mark in this remote county, she must work with the team she’s been given and untangle the web of lies surrounding the death of teenager, Jessica Hudson.

Can Freya ditch her designer heels for Wellington boots and adapt to the country life? Can she shape her new team into something workable? And can she put her past behind her long enough to prevent a second murder?

Secrets in Blood is the unforgettable first book in the Wild Fens Murder Mystery series by Jack Cartwright. Filled with twists, peppered with romance, and flavored with humor, the Wild Fens Murder Mystery series is perfect for fans of JD Kirk, JM Dalgliesh, Ann Cleeves, and Rachel McClean.

Good story line.

Good story and characters. The narrative by the narrator was so so laboriously tedious. He was monotone in his reading, he needs to do bedtime stories to help you sleep. He very nearly makes me turn off but I stayed with it wanting to know the story.
Overall good story line. Freya… a bit unbelievable she would have not been allowed back in the job but let’s see how that pans out.

Really enjoyed it.

Didn’t think any of the twist were real red herrings, pretty guessable, but still an enjoyable read.

Good story but fell short for me.

I enjoyed the overall story/mystery but a lot of the character interactions didn’t feel very realistic with the detectives overly explaining things to each other; whilst obviously for the readers benefit, it left the characters feeling a little amateurish. There seemed a lot of sexist or inappropriate comments made by the “professional” detectives which left it feeling a little out of touch too.
The narration was good.
This is my honest opinion of a free review copy.

good story let down by narrator

The story itself wasn't bad, it had some interesting twists which kept your attention. However the characters, with possibly the exception of DS Ben Savage, were unconvincing especially in their relationships with each other - particularly the police officers with Ben Savage and Freya Bloom, unconvincingly, doing everything themselves seemingly 'aided' by 2 Detective Constables who weren't allowed to undertake any work without being told or to leave the station and other things that didn't ring true including Bloom living in a mobile home in a car park.
by far the one thing to let a promising story down was the narrator who seemed to be under the impression that a Lincolnshire accent is actually a yorkshire one which also happened to be the only accent he could do properly - is he a yorkshireman? either way it was irritating and off putting. The only thing worse was the appalling acting out of the female characters by him. he would have done better to forget trying to do the voices and just read the story.

Let down by narrator

Story was slow but worth listening to. Narrator was not good. Hard to listen to and switched from monotone to whining.

Poor Narration

It could have been so much better with decent narration. It was like being read a story by your Grandad - very creepy when describing intimate scenes.
A potentially good story ruined by laborious monotone narration. He tried various voices for the characters but they all started to sound the same.

Ruined

What !might have been a good story, but difficult to follow. The narrator was Prime to what can only be described as a mumbled whisper.

An enjoyable light listen

Felt this didn’t get brilliant reviews but I bought it anyway. I enjoyed it. I thought the narrator was good and the accent’s authentic. I know the area where it is set so that enhanced my listening. Not a deep and meaningful book but an entertaining listen.
