Summary
Morse had never ceased to wonder why, with the staggering advances in medical science, all pronouncements concerning times of death seemed so disconcertingly vague.
The newly appointed member of the Oxford Examinations Syndicate was deaf, provincial and gifted. Now he is dead....
And his murder, in his north Oxford home, proves to be the start of a formidably labyrinthine case for Chief Inspector Morse, as he tries to track down the killer through the insular and bitchy world of the Oxford Colleges....

Great twists & turns
Great twists & turns as you expect from Colin Dexter. Samuel West has become a favourite narrator.

Terrific listen.
After watching the Morse series over many years and wanting read them as well, it was a real success and treat to listen to this audible.

Superb
Deftly plotted and cryptically laid out for us to try and get our heads around - Morse as superb as ever. I think I'll need to listen to this 2 or 3 times until I understand absolutely everything that's going on.

Great reading of an absorbing story
I have watched the TV series, but wasn't sure what to expect in written form. 'The Silent World of Nicholas Quinn' as a book is different, but just as enjoyable. Pleased and have already bought another in the series.
An absorbing story - the plot is improbable (the book's weakness) but fun in a murdery sort of way. Terrific atmosphere. Writing very immediate, like being there.
Beautifully read by Sam West who sensibly decides not to "ham it up" and instead puts in just enough so we can follow everything clearly, but not so much that we are robbed of using our imaginations - just the way I like a reading.

brilliant, a real roller coaster.
fixed in time, back in the mid 1970's, Morse is not a paragon of virtue, but a mere mortal with a very clever mind.
well characterised and brilliantly read.
have a beer, close your eyes and follow the master.

More convoluted nonsense.
The motivations for murder do not add up. A really big hole in the alibi that every other character would have seen straight off. For some reason characters are noticing tiny details that mean nothing, but not, a staring you in the face obvious one. And finally, I am now starting to see a repetition of the authors plot devices and lazy characterisation. Luckily, only one very attractive female character wants to throw themselves at Morse's gentle grey eyes and testosterone dripping voice. What I am finding surprising about the books over the telly series is the amount of 'good old fashioned' sexism from Morse. He is a bad influence on the angelic Lewis.
Oh well, I think I'll need to take a break from Morse for a while. Samuel West's narration is as good as ever.
