Summary
When a failed entrepreneur is temporarily left in charge of his aunt's huge gothic home, he knows he must be able to make a profit from it somehow. Murder, he decides, is the only way to do it. For Madingley Grange is the perfect venue for a 1930s murder-mystery weekend, and Simon Hannaford – with the reluctant help of his long-suffering sister – soon hatches a plan for money-spinning mayhem.
From the conservatory to the claret cellar, the clues are carefully sprinkled. But when the guests arrive, it is obvious that the game won't be going as planned. Not one of the visitors is willing to play the victim. And when a body does appear, it hardly takes Hercule Poirot to guess it is not a volunteer. Now the game really begins...
Critic reviews
"Audiobook listeners, as well as nine paying guests, are invited to a 1930s murder mystery weekend at a faux gothic country house. The talented English actor John Hopkins narrates this lively mystery, creating the glamorous atmosphere of the best vintage whodunits. His deep voice captures the posh sound of the weekend's scheming host, Simon. Hopkins also does a fabulous job presenting the character Fred, whose crassness offends so many of the stuffy guests. Hopkins's portrayal of the larcenous butler is hilarious and memorable. Many things go wrong over the weekend, and listeners will be kept intrigued. There's romance in the conservatory, as well as knives and blood.... It's fun to hear the scenes unfold." (AudioFile)
'Simply the best detective writer since Agatha Christie.' (The Sunday Times)

Very entertaining
That was a very entertaining and old fashioned mystery, with a real twist and unexpected ending. Unexpected but in a way happy ending, all very civilised and amicable. There was lots of good humour in this book. Really recommend it to fans of old fashioned Murder Mysteries :).

I felt I was at the theatre!
I loved John Hopkins narration. He never disappoints to bring each character to life in my head. His narration gives everyone a personality, sometimes hilariously.
If you want a country house farse type mystery this is for you.
Caroline Graham has such wit and sense of humour and it shone out in this book. It’s light, refreshing but you do need to concentrate to keep track of the characters.

Good fun for light hearted mystery lovers
Enjoyed this fun / witty mystery, the characters are interesting and the storyline has a number of twists and turns. The plot is ‘silly’ but no more so than a classic midsummer murder and that is part of the charm of the book.
The narration is fantastic which elevates the experience and adds excitement / interest.
Overall would recommend / listen to more by the author.

Agatha Christie meets P.G. Wodehouse
Agatha Christie meets P.G. Wodehouse. If you’re a fan of these two literary colossi then this book is for you.
Parody & farce. Beautifully written.
Yes, it’s all very silly but that’s the point - it’s meant to be silly.
Close your eyes, sit back & relax with a nice drink (or two) to delight in Caroline Graham’s wonderful prose - perfectly complemented by John Hopkins’ narration.
See the scenes unfold in your mind’s eye. As one reviewer said “It’s like being in the theatre” or in the cinema.

The constant laugh out loud moments!
This was an English Country House murder mystery at its funniest and finest. John Hopkins is the funniest and best narrator imaginable for this book. Utterly brilliant and hugely entertaining- captures our motley crew of characters perfectly.
Caroline Graham is an exceptional writer and her turn of phrase leaves us laughing and chortling throughout.
Not the most complex plot, nor is there much by way of actual “murder/mystery” but it’s not really missed as this genteel farce wends it’s merry way along.
Great stuff!
