About this listen

A mystery novelist with writer’s block, a lavish party to ring in the new year, and a film star with three bullets through his head…

December 1927. Mystery-writer Marius Quin has one previous bestseller, endless looming mortgage payments, and no idea how to write his next book. When his childhood friend Lady Isabella Montague invites him to an intimate New Year’s Eve party hosted by a narcissistic actor, Marius seizes upon the distraction. With his perpetually glum Basset hound along for the ride, he navigates the snowy lanes to the opulent estate of Everham Hall. As the celebrations begin, fireworks light up the sky, champagne corks pop, and then the host is murdered…

Snowed-in and with the police unable to reach them, Marius is the closest thing the panicked party has to a detective and he is swiftly nominated to find the killer. But when two more guests are attacked, Marius soon realises that solving mysteries is even harder than writing them. With Bella at his side, and a clutch of conniving suspects to choose from, can Marius find the culprit before the killer targets him?

A completely charming and witty golden-age cozy mystery, perfect for the Christmas season. Fans of Agatha Christie, T E Kinsey and Lee Strauss won’t be able to put down the Marius Quin Mysteries!

Good — but

As a great fan of Benedict Browns ‘ Lord Edgington ‘ series - I was looking forward to the new one .
I admit the plot was good ….. however it was extremely disconcerting to hear the same voice used
for the Narrator/Young Detective as in the other series . It kept throwing me off balance , especially
as the additional voices from the previous series were evident too .
I will listen to the next ……but not sure 🤷‍♂️if I’ll be as invested .

Light entertainment

This just stayed on the right line of having enough plot to sustain… it was well written and narrated. Characters were pleasant, plot was ok but felt a little stretched out.

Real good voice artist. Actually superb

Whilst the story was full and entertaining the end was, as with all these genre stories a bit flat.

boring

this really is nothing special. There is nothing original about the setting or characters and the plot isn't exciting at all.

First listen to a Benedict Brown novel- Loved it!

Simply put this was a terrific story & wonderfully read ! Can’t wait for the next one. Funny with clever twists and turns - with two great lead characters.
Whilst I wait for the new Marios Quinn novel I will try Benedict’s other series.. sure it will be great!

new series

A good start to a new series. different to Lord Edgington, but set in the same period. the 1920s is a good period for detective fiction. A 5 star read, well narrated and progressing nicely through the plot.

Likeable

I thought from the cover and 1920s setting that this would be a cosy, Bunty saves Minty from horridness kind of book. Thankfully not. It’s fun and easy to read but not twee.

PUERILE

The narrator did his best, but what a ridiculous story, badly written. I couldn't begin to finish it, and would like to return it for credit but can no longer find that facility.
