About this listen

A suspicious death and a large inheritance without anyone to receive it

Eric Ward is forced to retire from the police when he discovers he suffers from glaucoma. But he qualifies as a lawyer and sets up his practice on the Quayside in Newcastle, where he deals with the seamier side of the law.

Ward thinks there is something odd about Arthur Egan’s life and death, but the former police inspector is trained to be suspicious. Egan left a large sum, but Ward makes no progress tracing the dead man’s offspring. A photograph of an unknown tombstone is his only clue. He discovers Egan served a term for manslaughter and that the evidence against him may have been planted. Why had he accepted his fate so meekly?

Despite warnings that he is wasting the firm’s time, Ward persists in his investigations. And by the time he realizes why, he finds his life and career are both at risk.

This fast-paced mystery will have you enthralled from the start. Set in England in the late 1970s, this is the first book to feature Eric Ward.

Surprisingly good.

I'm surprised how much I enjoyed "The Sedleigh Hall Murder," especially for a free Audible listen! The storylines are skillfully interwoven and the pacing is just right - Lewis even manages to create a sense of danger and urgency despite the book's shortness.
Never having heard of the author, I picked the book randomly and did not expect much, but Roy Lewis's excellent writing, characterisation and setting blew me away. I'm looking forward to seeing where Lewis takes Eric Ward's story.

Great story with insight and confidently told

Great story with insight and confidently told. This is the first one in the series I’ve listened to and I love it. The narration is really good and the tone suits the pace of the story. It’s methodical and if it’s time but fair and honourable.
Definitely recommend

Narration spoiled what might have been a decent story

Difficult to pin down what accent this guy was going for - Bangor or Byker. Ah doot he's ivvor been near the Toon. I'm from Yorkshire and I have a better Newcastle accent!

excellent narrator

How often do we "suffer" through a fantastic book, because the story is gripping and wonderfully written, but an overly ambitious or underqualified narrator makes it nevertheless difficult to hang in till the end. Not so here. the narrator leaves that important space to form own pictures and impressions of each character, while still giving them enough personality to carry the story. Thank you.

Interesting plot

Enjoyable read, good plot and characters. I liked the police man turned solicitor. Possibly not such good narration. Will look out for book 2

A different take on a murder mystery

A different take on a murder mystery, the narrator suited the mood and time of the story, but more like reading the book than acting the parts. It was okay, especially as it was included. Would have been difficult to guess the outcome.

Dull and pedestrian, not for me

The story had potential, but overall a disappointing experience. Some rather peculiar lines in the plot, which all lead to naught, and just seemed to be a waste of words. I ploughed through it, but with effort. The narrator was ok, until he tried to do a Geordie and Welsh accent. We end up with an amalgamation of the two, which is really quite bizarre.
