About this listen

There's a murderer on the loose on a storm swept island cut off from the Scottish mainland. It's down to Losers Club, a quirky weight loss group led by the intrepid Penny Moon, to catch the culprit.

When Old Archie the postman is shot and ends up in Mrs Hubbard's ice cream freezer, the whole island is aghast. Especially Mr Hubbard, who objects strongly to having to move all the ice lollies into the other freezer. Newly divorced and desperate to make a life for herself and her teenage children, Penny Moon arrives on Vik just in the nick of time, before the island is cut off by a storm. Her weight loss business doesn't have the best of starts, when a series of blunders leads to it being called Losers Club. However, it does have the best of people—a decent, disparate bunch who decide that, with the police unlikely to arrive any time soon and a murderer on the loose, it is down to Losers Club to investigate. As they dig deeper into the mystery, they uncover a dark secret, kept by the older islanders for almost half a century. A secret that has come back to haunt them and threatens their very existence.

Enjoyable

I enjoyed the story. I liked the characters and there were a few surprises for me in the plot. The narrator has a clipped style, but enunciated clearly.

Unusual rambling story with humourous moments

I enjoy unlikely groups drawn together to solve a mystery. All the 'Losers' played their part and stayed in character. The reveals were unexpected. There were funny moments although the coarse humour felt overdone. For me the characters seemed one dimensional. I thought the narrator did a great job.

Great book

This book is very funny. It's really well written with many likeable characters that are brought to life by excellent narration.

Enjoyable

A good story spoilt by swearing but a good read with comical characters and a twist in the end

Not the greatest.

I listened to the end of this book but could easily have given up. The story is slow and there is to much effort put in to trying to make what are really poor jokes. The characters are really not very likeable and the story is unbelievable. I don't like negative reviews but I'm sorry I can't really think of anything outstanding to say about this book apart from the fact it is struggling to be average. I suppose the best thing about it is the narration which is quite good.

Engaging, laughed out loud at lots of points, murder mystery

I’m constantly listening to audiobooks but very rarely feel moved enough to review them. Loved the characters, the setting, the storyline and I actually laughed out loud multiple times which I haven’t done listening to a story in a long time. Murder mystery but also feels cosy and not distressing. So pleased I tried this book, clearly an amazing author and was well performed, will be starting the next in the series tonight!
