Summary

'Where does this all leave us, sir?'

'Things are moving fast.'

'We're getting near the end, you mean?'

'We were always near the end.'

The murder of Yvonne Harrison had left Thames Valley CID baffled. A year after the dreadful crime they are still no nearer to making an arrest. But one man has yet to tackle the case - and it is just the sort of puzzle at which Chief Inspector Morse excels.

So why is he adamant that he will not lead the re-investigation, despite the entreaties of Chief Superintendent Strange and dark hints of some new evidence? And why, if he refuses to take on the case officially, does he seem to be carrying out his own private enquiries?

For Sergeant Lewis this is yet another example of the unsettling behaviour his chief has been displaying of late....

A beautiful end to a beautiful series

This is an excellent audiobook. For those who have listened to other Morse audiobooks in this series, this is a fitting end. Packed with more content than usual and wonderfully narrated by Mr. Samuel West, I highly recommend it.

Remorseful... no, not really

The best of the Inspector Morse stories, very closely followed by The Wench is Dead.

Strangely moving

An expected finale to the series, which has played out almost from the beginning. Excellent.

A very enjoyable journey!

This has been one of the best series of audiobooks I have listened to! The story's are quite brilliant, all the twists and turns, the banter between Morse and Lewis are quite brilliant and made me laugh many times! Samuel west is absolutely brilliant narrating, just sad to have finished the series!

Morse at his best..

As a John Thaw Morse fan, I have skirted around the audio books after hearing some radio plays that I struggled with. But after watching my DVD collection I thought I'd take a chance on the saddest of them all and was not disappointed. I thought I would struggle with the narrator , but he did an excellent job. Keeping me hooked even though I know the story. Great writing, great narration and will look at more of the Morse audio books the narrator Samuel West. I would highly recommend this book. Not just to Morse fans, but anyone who loves a great murder mystery.

Best detective character ever devised?

This final Inspector Morse tale completes my reading/listening of/to all 13 of Colin Dexter’s masterpieces. I have all 13 in print also! Quite the best of a remarkably good collection. Samuel West’s narration of the three main characters, Morse, Lewis and Strange, was a most satisfying experience. It was like hearing the individual actors with their distinct accents!
Now if only the Lewis stories were to appear in Audible format......
