About this listen
An LAPD homicide detective must choose between justice and vengeance as he teams up with the FBI in the first novel of the "thrilling" Harry Bosch series (New York Times Book Review).
For maverick LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch, the body in the drainpipe at Mulholland Dam is more than another anonymous statistic. This one is personal...because the murdered man was a fellow Vietnam "tunnel rat" who had fought side by side with him in a hellish underground war. Now Bosch is about to relive the horror of Nam. From a dangerous maze of blind alleys to a daring criminal heist beneath the city, his survival instincts will once again be tested to their limit. Pitted against enemies inside his own department and forced to make the agonizing choice between justice and vengeance, Bosch goes on the hunt for a killer whose true face will shock him.
Impressed? Ace detective Harry Bosch is also on the case in other exciting Michael Connelly crime-fiction novels.©1992 by Michael Connelly. (P)1992 Brilliance Audio, all rights reserved. What listeners say about The Black Echo: Harry Bosch Series, Book 1

Police procedural as it should be
Very good linear police procedural which is not trying to be anything else. Classic Connelly with enough twists and turns to hold interest. Although I have read most of the the Harry Bosch series over the years, this reminded me that I would enjoy going back for a listen this time. Dick Hill did a god narration job so shall look for him in the rest of the series and other books.

Good story.
Initially I wanted to return the book, as The beginning of it was not exactly comprehensible and does not give an idea of the story to come. But if you have the same feeling, be patient - it shall come... The story, the thrill, the character of detective - everything is there.

A cross between Rebus and Jack Reacher
I enjoyed this book, having not listened to anything by Michael Connelly before I was pleasantly surprised. The story was complicated enough to keep me interested. The narration is good, I had listened to a couple of Jack Reacher books narrated by Dick Hill so knew what to expect. I'm off to listen to Black Ice now!

And the echo will go on and on...
What made the experience of listening to The Black Echo: Harry Bosch Series, Book 1 the most enjoyable?
Everything. Harry Bosch, Michael Connelly's fully three dimensional main character, is engaging but flawed with a fascinating past into which we are given glimpses as the story evolves. The plot is satisfyingly complex without pushing credulity too far. Dialogue is natural and Dick Hill flawlessly gives the characters voice as well as reading the narrative clearly and with expression. Wonderful.
What does Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Dick Hill's excellent interpretation of the verbal conversations between characters helps to give even more depth and reality to each one. I had already read the book some years ago so had a mental picture of them all and, far from contradicting my impressions from that time, Hill's readings enhanced my feelings of getting to know the main protagonists as the story progressed
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I felt fully engaged with Bosch's emotions: from the bleakness of his past experiences in Vietnam to his present stirrings of being unexpectedly drawn from his self imposed isolation into closeness with another
Any additional comments?
Michael Connelly's books are always exceptional. This audio book does full justice to his writing.
