Summary
London, 1882. Alec Lonsdale, a young reporter on the Pall Mall Gazette, is working on a story about a fatal house fire. But the postmortem on the victim produces shocking results: Patrick Donovan's death was no accident. But why would someone murder a humble shop assistant and steal part of his brain?
When a second body is discovered, its throat cut, and then a third, Lonsdale and his spirited female colleague, Hulda Friederichs, begin to uncover evidence of a conspiracy that reaches to the highest echelons of Victorian society.

Connection to real events
Very enjoyable from beginning to end. Brilliant depiction of Victorian era. Believable characters based upon historic subjects.

Victorian mystery with a twist
Interesting slant on the ever popular theme of Victorian murder mysteries . Characters are entertaining well worth a listen hope next one is as good. Excellently read by Jonathan Keeble as usual

Complex plotting
Excellent narration which added to the pleasure of this tale. Very much in the style of a Holmes story.Unexpected twists and I really enjoyed this.

Excellent story and narrator
Came across this book in a sale and really enjoyed it. The story was excellent with twists and turns and very atmospheric.
The narrator was very good and adds depth to the characters. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a story with a bit of a difference.

What a find
Had this on my wish list for a while then bought it this month
I thoroughly enjoyed it. Very atmospheric.
I was going to get authors second book in series, but like others without Jonathan Keeble,who as usual,was superb,reading it, I shan’t bother.
Narrators are so important.They can make or ruin a book, even when the story is good.
Authors take note.

Flows nicely
Interesting and held my attention. Few twists I didn’t see coming and a few unbelievably consequences but all and all solid. Bought as a BOGOF and well narrated.

A pacy, historical mystery novel with a basis in some minor true events.
I’m not sure how I came to choose this book, but am glad I did. With both male and female protagonists this was an unusual tale from Edwardian times. Not just a murder mystery, but a societal plot fitting the times. As usual with such things, the villains are not who they appear to be, at almost any point in the story. Some of the doers of the evil deeds become slowly known and stopped, but of course it’s the brains behind the events that require discovery. (Puns intended, I’m afraid).
Jonathan Keeble provides a well-narrated tale that has several moments of high excitement, particularly towards the latter stages. I’ve listened to several of Keeble’s narrations before, so knew he could be good, but I suspect this is the best I’ve heard him do. I shall look out for more of this author/narrator combination.
I confess to not knowing much about how society was run in this period, or how journalism operated. It seems that the female reporter, Hulder Friedrichs, was a real journalist of the time (the Epilogue relates various events that were true and helped in creating the plot) as were other characters herein, also. It’s always a welcome change to listen to stories from less modern times and this was very good. I’m not a big fan of the use of guns in stories, as they can be a shortcut to excitement when it is unlikely. Guns do appear here from time to time, but less often to use by the characters, thank goodness.
I’d recommend listening to this story by anyone who enjoys a mystery in a slightly more historical setting.
