About this listen

Morse had solved so many mysteries in his life. Was he now, he wondered, beginning to glimpse the solution to the greatest mystery of them all?

How can the discovery of a short story by a beautiful Oxford graduate lead Chief Inspector Morse to her murderer? What awaits Morse and Lewis in Room 231 of the Randolph Hotel? Why does a theft at Christmas lead the detective to look upon the festive season with uncharacteristic goodwill? And what happens when Morse himself falls victim to a brilliantly executed crime?

This dazzling collection of short stories from Inspector Morse's creator, Colin Dexter, includes six ingenious cases for the world's most popular fictional detective - plus five other tantalizingly original tales to delight all lovers of classic crime fiction.

Excellent

Super narration as always and wish more Morse novels were available, I’ve listened to all that are available at this stage.

Fantastic narration of a slightly odd book

Not all of these stories are Morse, let’s get that out of the way first. They’re all Dexter, but not all Morse. For that reason it is a little odd.

What makes it still wonderful, however, is the narration. Samuel West really is a truly amazing narrator. His accents are flawless (the American story was fantastic, accent-wise, despite being my least favourite story), his reading is smooth, and the characters are clearly identifiable. For a book with a LOT of characters it is nothing short of amazing.

Not quite what I expected. Not all Morse.

The title is misleading - and evidently wasn't the original title of this collection of short stories. Only six out of the eleven stories are Morse stories. But of course - being Samuel West, the narration is terrific. I even listened to quite a long American story that wasn't my cup of tea just because I was fascinated by his perfect American accents!

I haven't yet listened to all the stories but I will come back to them - if only for the golden narration. (There is a lovely, very short, Xmas Morse story.)

Wrongly titled

This is actually Good as Gold and Other Stories. Which is Morse’s Greatest Mystery and Other Stories plus the short story Good as Gold.

All Colin Dexter but not all Morse

This is a collection of short stories written by Colin Dexter. However, the title is misleading, as not all the stories feature Morse. One of the stories is a Sherlock Holmes case (but written by Colin Dexter).

The stories vary in their appeal and entertainment value. I have not read Colin Dexter before and I was dismayed at the amount of blasphemy peppered throughout it. Also, I found the stories to have too many unnecessary twists and turns for my taste.

Samuel West, like his father, is an excellent narrator.
