Summary

Their world isn't quite what it seems. It might not be a world at all...

Udo's biggest problem isn't being a digger (that's low class), or staying drunk (that's damn expensive), or avoiding the Dwergaz (they're monsters), or even pissing off the supposed Gods.

It's that his reality...well, it isn't what he thought.

And now, he can't even afford to drink because his so-called friend Nicz is cutting into his business, digging up tin, iron, and copper. So Udo forms a new plan: clay. After all, clay jars are used to store everything: meat, herbs, and, his personal favorite, ale.

But in his hunt for clay, Udo drills too far, is captured by the Dwergaz, and brought to the goddess Ing - or what he believes is a goddess. As Udo digs deeper into his world, and not just by digging holes, what he discovers is far beyond mountains and gods and monsters.

There may be other worlds beyond his. Worlds surrounding other stars. In fact, his own home may not be a world at all.

Udo the Digger bends the tropes of science fiction and fantasy into a wild adventure that will amuse and surprise even veterans of both genres. It's perfect for fans of Arthur C. Clarke's Rama, Horizon Zero Dawn, Aurora, and Book of the Long Sun.

Very different - but entertaining

My early feelings with this were... it's weird. Even for fantasy. It's also pretty coarse in places - language and story. Joshua Gayou is however a rather excellent story teller. Characters are flawed, entertaining, believable. As with his post - apocalyptic series - people are rarely painted in a perfect and wonderful light. The story - and certain short and infrequent references within it - make it obvious that significantly more is going on than meets the eye - and none of that is really clarified in this first book. It does however lend an intriguing further element to the tale. The main protagonist - Udo - is someone you get behind pretty early on - his heart is good even if his drinking and enthusiasm for drink is a little on the heavy side.

It's hard to praise R. C. Bray sufficiently. To me his narration just gets better and better - for this story he is perfect and is absolutely the icing on a rich and interesting cake.

If you like slow burners

This was such a slow story, a few gems here and there and good writing but sooo slow and very little occurs. Narrator great.

if your easily offended ..off

even for me the profanity was a bit much to start but as you became accustomed to it you start to see something else...even more profanity .
brilliantly captures the humour found in terrible situations. it highlights the way people are awful while hunting at some freaky Buck Rogers shinanigans to come.

In a word, awesome!

To begin with, I couldn't really work out where the story was going, seemed just to be about Udo and his struggles. Don't get me wrong, this was great, as I love the character, love how real he is, love how "matter of fact" he is and felt for him during his total shunning by all around him. And then, when the story began to unravel, it only got better and better. Can’t wait to listen to the next book now as I am purely hooked and have so many questions! The writing has a way of informing you of fact without as much as telling you directly, leaving you to come to the assumption of what Joshua is trying to make you realise yourself if that makes sense? Needless to say, R.C. Bray was his usual awesomeness also, in fact he seems to be getting better and better in his narration, having followed him for several years now, loving the increased range he seems to now have with different characters; case in point Reise and Geffen. In a word, awesome!

Repetitive and predictable. Fantastic and wierd

Whilst after the first few chapters I think the unfolding svensrmriis became quite obvious. the mystery apparent

But that's not the point. The way the world is built and our discovery gripping.

oh and any Gus (MM) fans out there. you'll fall in love agàiñ,

Good performance, weird story

I listened till the end as the reader held my attention but as to the story, it didn't grab me. Lots of swearing (which doesn't really offend my sensitivities) Having struggled to get to the end I still don't know what the book was about.
