About this listen

After escaping Doragon’s clutches, Roy finds himself stranded in the Windblight, a harsh desert under the control of a rival clan - one that won’t think twice about tossing him in their fighting arena to pay off a perceived debt.

Meanwhile, Aika, Ferry, and Hermit face their own problems in the form of retribution from the Itachi clan. While Hermit might be a Sovereign, his sister carries the same title.

With enemies closing in on all sides, the three of them must work hard to stay ahead and continue on the trail of their abducted friend.

Another enjoyable listen

I found this to be another compelling instalment in the series and will be looking forward to see where the author takes it in the future, potential new listeners should check out the earlier books in the series first before this one as otherwise you miss out on a lot of the development of the main characters by trying to join late and may not appreciate it as much.

The performance of the narrator is a strong one, providing a suitably distinctive range that adds to the characters in a clear and pleasant manner.

Overall, another strong instalment in this series.

Great series from a great author

I listen to pretty much everything Aaron Oster writes and was lucky enough to get this free review copy. The quality of his books is pretty consistent so if you like one of his books, you'll probably like them all.

This is where I hop off

The last book was great, and so was the first half of this book, but as we see the author yet again try to merge another book with his greater universe, things start to go off the rails, rules are broken, more thinly disguised deus ex machina happens and all the progression that once felt earned now feels random. What's the point of caring about a fight if everyone can be exactly as powerful as they need to be to win?

Worse, Roy made a promise and completely forgot about it at the end of the book, yet another chekhov's gun/lose end we may or may not ever revisit. Maybe the author forgot about it too? Probably not. Sadly however, I no longer care.
