Summary

Having a second baby is a very different experience from having your first, yet there is little recognition of the wide range of issues that need to be considered when bringing a second child into the family. In this incredibly helpful book, Sarah Ockwell-Smith helps parents feel more positive and prepared for life with two children.

The book begins with the obvious question: when is the right time to add another member to the family? It then goes on to examine the specific issues that can arise with a second pregnancy and birth; the common concerns about siblings, such as how to prepare your firstborn for what's to come; how to cope with the practicalities of life with two young children (aka actually managing to get anything done!); and the feelings parents are likely to experience, too.

The Second Baby Book examines all the questions and issues Sarah herself faced second time around as well as sharing the experiences of the many parents who have sought her advice. It also highlights what scientific studies reveal about such issues as the spacing of children and the differences between first and second births. Practical, insightful and honest, this book will help you understand the challenges ahead, but, more importantly, it will equip you to meet them with knowledge, confidence and a sense of excitement for the future.

Good

a good book which makes you think about the many different aspects of having a second. Some advice you have to take with a pinch of salt.
The narrators different northern and western accents when quoting people are hilarious.

Really helpful

I really found this book so helpful in thinking about decision making around having a second baby. Lots of practical advice for supporting parents, first born and second born with the transition to an extending family. The only thing that I will say that its got a very traditional outlook mostly geared towards heterosexual co-parent households. So a book out there might be needed for more diverse families too!?

Absolutely brilliant

I love Sarah, I’ve read all her books now, and expecting a baby in October, this one came along at exactly the right time.

I’m not sure if it’s the hormones, or the fact that Sarah is so good at voicing all the conflicting emotions I have going on inside, but I cried my way through this book. The mum guilt of having a second, the secret joy, the terrified anticipation of what is to come, all of it came with amazing advice. One of my favourite things about Sarah’s books is she makes me realise everything I’m feeling is totally normal, and other mums have felt exactly how I have for centuries.

For anyone expecting, this book is an amazing read and has made me feel so much more prepared for baby 2. Now I just need to get the grandparents to read it so they can understand where I’m coming from when I ask them to do certain things in a certain way.

Also, good narrator choice, easy to listen to and a British accent

So helpful… practical and emotional guide to managing all that comes with a second child

Read this book before second baby is born: there is advice I wish I had heard beforehand. It’s still very helpful however once baby arrives. I’m likely to listen to snippets again. The book is like a big hug.
