About this listen

Bloomsbury presents Stay in the Light by A.M. Shine, read by Jacqueline Milne.

From critically acclaimed Irish horror writer A.M. Shine, the sequel to The Watchers, now adapted into a major motion picture produced by M. Night Shyamalan.

YOU MAY HAVE ESCAPED... BUT YOU'LL NEVER BE FREE.

After her terrifying experience at the hands of the Watchers, Mina has escaped to a cottage on the west coast of Ireland. She obsessively researches her former captors, desperate to find any way to prolong the safety of humankind.

When Mina encounters a stranger near her home, she fears the worst – for she knows the figure is not what it seems. Soon, people she has encountered start to disappear.

Mina knows the Watchers' power is growing. She flees for her life, but when she reports her fears she finds her sanity questioned. Can she convince people that the Watchers are real, and ready to strike – or will she suffer the fate she has dreaded since she first encountered those malevolent beings?

A chilling modern twist on the Gothic horror novel, perfect for fans of Kealan Patrick Burke, T. Kingfisher and classic horror.©2024 A.M. Shine (P)2024 Head of Zeus

Great sequel

A sequel better than the first novel. Looking forward to the next chapter. Narrator still a bit wooden but improved from last book.

Another brilliant instalment

Another excellent read from A. M. Shine. I listened to it over a couple of nights, because I just couldn’t stop listening. I hope the author writes another book quickly.

Great but not as amazing as The Watchers

It’s good. Almost great. I’m expecting maybe a series. But I don’t think it was as good as the watchers. Still though. I’d recommend

Great sequel

Sometimes a second book doesn’t meet expectations, but not this one! The story really gets ramped up to another level. Twists and turns throughout and some proper nail biting moments. A truly fantastic book

rushed sequel, superb narration

loved being back in the world of The Watchers, but this book feels rushed in every department. Spreading the story around multiple povs does none of them any favours. Mina gets no development and the new dual protagonist of Shaun was honestly a real drag, with his storyline pretty much a total retread of the videotape exposition from the first book, which I think most will agree is the worst aspect of The Watchers. The plot is spread way too thin -- if you can call it a plot because it really amounts to nothing more than characters being stuck somewhere and either talking about or looking for fairies. It is more a 1.5 than a sequel, and rather than act as a compelling expansion of the world and characters of the first book, a means to an end for a cliff hanger finale hasn't been set up properly. There is one bright spark in all of this and that's the audiobook, and the return of Jacqueline Milne, MVP of audible, who once again knocks it out of the park.

A dark and twisted rollercoaster of emotions

Stay in the light continues Mina’s journey from “The Watchers” giving her hope for the future.

It then rapidly builds tension by introducing new characters and building on the original story with new twists and turns.

It’s atmospheric, tense and dark with a beautiful sense of isolation for the lead even when she is surrounded by people, you can feel Mina’s loneliness and wariness given what she knows of the watchers abilities.

The Irish/Celtic lore is expanded and gets even more terrifying.

Absolutely loved it.

what a shame

I was a big fan of The Watchers, and looking forward to the movie version.
I wondered where a second book would take the story and what value it would add.
it's a 1.5 sequel. 9 hrs audible book and nothing happens until the final hour. very disappointed.
sure I liked the final hour but the rest of the story just felt like a 'season 1' recap of what the characters had been through and how they felt. not what I wanted from a the first books intense and claustrophobic horror /mystery.

What a shame!

The Watchers is an excellent book. It's creepy and tense. The sections in which the characters reside in the shelter are really effective. The ending is less so. Here is the sequel, which is unfortunately rather unnecessary and comes across as a bit of a cash-in with the recent release of the Watchers movie. It's quite boring and uneventful and chooses to focus upon the less interesting ideas from the first book.

Deeply Disappointing

The narrator does a good job but no matter how good the voice work is, it doesn't make much difference when the story is so half-baked, every character underdeveloped, and each "twist" so blatantly telegraphed.

Worse than all that, though barely, is the fact that it feels like part of a story, not in that it is a sequel, in that there is so little of it, like the beginning and end were missing, and this was just the middle section.
