About this listen

The red night of bells heralds global catastrophe. Annihilation on a biblical scale. Seeing the morning is no blessing. The handful of scattered survivors are confronted by blood-red skies and an infestation of predatory horrors that never originated on earth. An occupying force intent on erasing the remnants of animal life from the planet. Across the deserted landscapes of England, bereft of infrastructure and society, the overlooked can either hide or try to outrun the infernal hunting terrors. Until a rumour emerges claiming that the sea may offer an escape.

Ordinary, unexceptional, directionless Karl, is one of the few who made it through the first night. In the company of two orphans, he flees south. But only into horrifying revelations and greater peril, where a transformed world and expanding race of ravening creatures await. Driven to the end of the country and himself, he must overcome alien and human malevolence and act in ways that were unthinkable mere days before.

All The Fiends of Hell is a novel of alien horror from the four times winner of the August Derleth Award for Best Horror Novel.

Pretty Good

Good story, struggled a bit with the narrator. it was well read, just a bit too nicey, nicey for the tone of the book, for my personal taste.

If 'The Mist', 'War of the Worlds', and '28 Days Later' had a lovechild.

An enjoyable, if somewhat predictable, apocalyptic tale. Somehwere between War of the Worlds, The Mist, 28 Days Later, the Book of Revelations, and HP Lovecraft, as our (sometimes frustratingly whiny) protagonist Karl awakens from a terrible fever to find the Earth seemingly devoid of life, and the lands seemingly stalked by bizarre and hellish beings under an ominous red sky, and is forced to makes a perilous cross-country journey in the search of safety, meeting various other survivors along the way, each dealing with armageddon in their own way.

The book is well written and decently paced, if a little slow to begin, and the narration is good. the story itself is fine, although it feels predictable, and you can guess how the story is going to play out early on.

Took me by surprise!

I downloaded this on a whim. At first I thought this seems ok. The narrator sounds like the presenter of a day time documentary, or a war time news presenter. At first I wasn't sure, the story and concept seemed cool, but the narrator felt wrong. Turns out I was wrong. By the end of the book I was hooked and would not have changed the narrator for the world. I would highly recommend listening/reading this book, and if your first impressions don't blow you away, I urge you to stick with it. What at first seemed a bit light hearted and fairly run of the mill. Quickly turned into a dark, gripping story about the end of the world. This type of book had been done to death, but I genuinely really enjoyed this and will be looking at the authors other books. Thanks for Adam L. G. Nevill for the ride.

started off rapturous

Dissapointed as it ended up a war of the worlds clone. Too many themes in common with the HG Wells story.

I really enjoy his books however I didn't enjoy this one. Not sure why. I didn't have the same immersive feel from his other books.

Nevill at his best

Another superb horror tale from a master of his craft. I hope he does a sequel to this.

Terrifying and heartbreakingly brilliant

I love the way Adam Nevill writes he immerses you within the story and I think this particular narrator played a big part of that. I am not going into the story details but if you love horror with brilliant characters listen to this book it’s all about survival and loss but has heartwarming moments. I loved it. This could definitely be made into a movie

The tension stays throughout the story til the very end, I couldn't out it down.

This book was for our monthly book Club, I wanted to try a newer story and safe to say I was not disappointed, the characters felt real the horrors were intimidating and the tension palpable.

Gripping Stuff

Mixed reading and listening for this which worked well. Second Adam Nevill book for me after cunning folk. Characters as likeable, very tense in places. Put a scene at the end on double speed to cope.
