Love to hate or hate to love this series!

It’s really hard to tell if this is a series to stick with. One thing I can say is that I’m Really Very Glad that I bought this box set and not just the first title, because I really didn’t care for “Episode One” at all.

I liked that I got to meet all of the protagonists in and around the Police Station, but very few of them were truly likeable characters! It helped me to think of Meredith as Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister - Life on Mars), which made him more acceptable. However, Patsy Hodge is a total misrepresentation of a strong decisive woman! Freddie (Sherlock), is no better <sigh>…

I would have given up at this point and not looked back, but I had Episodes 2 and 3 to digest, so I persevered. I’m glad that I did.

These Episodes are broken down into two (subsequently three) components:- the interpersonal relationships between the characters and, depending on how you relate to them, the crime/mystery/murder.

I truly don’t like many of the relationships (except maybe Chris and Sarah), but I find the “Day Job” narratives very interesting. Because of the various relationships and interactions, the story takes a long time to tell (I frequently found myself increasing the narration speed, just to get through it, at times). However they are interesting and innovative.

Because I listened to all 3, I’m minded to continue purchasing the Box Sets. In this format, they are exceptional value for money and they link up well. I’m sure that everything from this point onwards will be better than Episode One (which was just a mess)!

The narration was pretty impressive, I do like the new DS’ and Nancy’s portrayals. To be honest, I could do with less of Meredith and Hodge’s private lives.

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.
