About this listen
A bloodied and bruised girl runs out of the woods and into the path of oncoming traffic. The police are shocked to discover that she's a missing schoolgirl they've been trying to find for the past three weeks. Traumatized by her ordeal, she's unable to tell them what happened to her.
A woman's body is found crucified in a barn on the Yorkshire Moors. Evidence found at the crime scene links her to the schoolgirl.
Hot on the heels of a commendation for her work on a serial killer case, Detective Inspector Danica Summers is invited to join an elite task force specializing in the investigation of high-profile crimes. Concerned that she's only been invited because she's good PR, Dani is desperate to prove that she's worthy of her place on the team.
When the case involving the missing schoolgirl and the murdered woman is taken on by the newly-formed Murder Force, Dani is touched by the vulnerability of the victims and is determined to capture the monster who ruined their lives.
Her search for justice will take her to the heart of darkness.

Amazing storyline/horrific narrator
I nearly gave up on this one. The storyline is amazing but the narrator really ruined it for me. At one point, I actually thought it was a bot reading out the story so was surprised to see a human name as the narrator. I think the narrator read out the dialog normally, but for the rest just read a random bunch of words once that were pieced together - that’s how it sounds!
I’ll be checking out the other books though! Hopefully this one is re-narrated for future sales!

The narrator... oh dear...
This narrator really needs to brush up on their regional accents. I winced at the sound of the Brummies in the first scene, whose accents resembled someone from the south-east attempting to talk Scouse, It carried on in the same vein...
Other than that, it was a well-paced ripping yarn!

Good plot shame about the narration
Lots of twists and turnaround to the plot. Strong personalities. But oh dear, narration only endurance if you turn the speed up

Interesting story
The narrator ruined this for me. She speaks bizarrely making ahhhh noises at the end of words. She sounds incredulous all the time. It’s such as shame as I think the book would have been so much better with a different narrator.

memorable narrator
This is an odd listen. The Narrator is very good at dialogue but all other prose has odd stresses at the end of every senTENCE. Like that, no matter how innocuous the line it's delivered like an exclamation mark existed. I grew to like it and worth a listen. The hero's are a dull sanctimonious bunch who you would happily enjoy listening to their demise in a hail of bullets but the narrator keeps you with it . Not easy to forget!

Decent story, if rather formulaic, let down by plummy, singsong, Received Pronunciation BBC posh narration.

Compelling storyline BUT dreadful narration
Storyline was good, and I will definitely check out the rest of this series.
However, the narration was really off putting. Another reviewer said it was Nigella Lawson esq narration, and I 100% agree. I kept hoping the word “microwave” was not in the book!
The thing is, when the narrator was in character she was bearable but the actual story narration was just that bit too much with the emphasis and drawing out of words.
Happy to see another narrator takes over the series, so fingers crossed for the next book!
