About this listen

Bella Tyson is a famous 40-something crime writer suffering from writer’s block ever since a bitter divorce two years before. When a fan offers her the use of an apartment in Venice, Bella jumps at it, hoping a change of scene will have her writing again. Once there, she soon meets Will, a charming Englishman, who shows her around the city.

Enchanted by both Will and her new surroundings, Bella decides to write a supernatural murder mystery and begins researching local legends and the city’s more sinister side, including an illicit visit to the island of Poveglia, spooky former home of Venice’s asylum. Soon Bella uncovers more than she has bargained for and finds herself enmeshed in a series of gruesome real-life murders that uncannily mirror the legends she is researching.

As she and Will join forces to investigate, real life and local lore merge disconcertingly - for nothing in Venice turns out to be what seems, including Will....

Dead in Venice

Dead in Venice by Fiona Leitch is a funny dark crime tale. It's about Bella a very human and relatable character, who's flaws make her come alive for me. Will is another character that I found easy to believe in.

The other great character in the book is Venice and here Fiona uses language to create pictures that take me there.

The story has both light and dark parts deal well with it's subject matter. It also has a lot of funny moments that help build the characters so that I cared what happened to them.

Entertaining

Chick-lit. A romance with dead bodies. I’ll read most anything about Venice and I like murder mysteries, so I was okay with it. Unfortunately I could see the plot twists a mile away but still, it was reasonably entertaining. You’ll have to decide for yourself whether it is right for you.

Get giddy on a gondola

Romantic and amusing with a few gruesome murders thrown in. A thoroughly good listen with some well written descriptive narratives that whisk you away to Venice. There were hints of a sequel and I, for one, would buy it. Well worth a listen.

Made me laugh out loud!!

Yes the plot line was pretty obvious but no less enjoyable! Love the way Fiona Leitch writes her characters…can’t help thinking that they’re perhaps based on her own self…? Also loved the narrator, she seemed to really enjoy the book too….bit of a dodgy Italian accent here and there! Great fun!!!!

Dude, Where's my Gondola?

I really enjoyed this book! A funny, foul mouthed character that becomes caught up in a murder mystery. What you assume is going to be cosy murder soon takes a VERY dark turn and the subject matter is unsettling. Be warned...funny, foul and nasty.

Not as long as I would have liked.

probably the shortest audible book I've ever purchased, feel slightly baffled that I've used a credit on this , loved that it was Venice but apart from that not very impressed

Beautiful Venice

I enjoyed the narrator except the Italian accent she put on for Bella. Interesting ending..The dream sequences were a bit repetitive. Honestly if I had read this book first, I probably would not have purchased any other. However I love the Cornwall series. In Fiona's first volume, I laughed so hard ..very witty writing

A fab fun read

Bella Tyson is a famous author, her genre is crime and she loves to write a good old Murder Mystery, but there is one thing holding her back at the moment, and that is writers block, after a messy and bitter divorce a couple of years ago, she just can't seem to get back into the swing of it.

She receives an email from a fan who offers her an apartment in Venice to help her with new ideas for her new novel.
Bella obviously jumps at the chance, and soon starts thinking of ideas for her new book.

After arriving in Venice and meeting the very dashing Will, the two set off to see the sights of Venice, well until the murders start happening obviously!

This is brilliant for Bella as she can use these brutal murders for inspiration for her book, but then weird things keep happening that she can't explain!

A super fun read, I loved Bella's character, she used humour a lot to get herself out of situations, and I love her for that as I tend to do the same thing, although not as brilliantly as her!

Expertly narrated by Deryn Edwards, who bought Bella's character to life and showed her sparkling personality.

A short listen at only 6 hours, and well worth grabbing!

An entertaining mash-up of rom-com and crime

Successful crime writer Bella is suffering from what feels like terminal writer's block and is desperate for a change in her life, so when a random fan invites her to stay in her Venice apartment she jumps at the chance. She expects to spend her time writing, shopping and sitting in picturesque cafes. What she doesn't expect is a string of bizarre deaths, a series of possibly-ghostly goings-on and an irresistible pull towards the mysterious and handsome Will.

As the body count - and Bella's heart rate - rises she finds plenty of material for her new book - and uncovers a secret which will change everything.

One of the annoying things about how the publishing industry works is that everything has to fit into neat categories - romance, crime, ghost story, whatever - but this book includes elements of all three and the result is entertaining from beginning to end. I'm not sure I agreed with all Bella's choices but she was a great, relatable character whose sarcasm in the face of danger had me laughing out loud. If you like your grisly murders with a side order of witty dialogue and romance, you'll love this.
