Summary

Shortlisted for Theaksons Old Peculiar Crime Novel of the Year, 2008.

Luke Mullen, sixteen year old son of a former high-ranking police officer has disappeared, presumed kidnapped. While no-one quite dares to voice the fear that he could also be presumed dead, Detective Inspector Tom Thorne is brought in to beef up the squad dedicated to locating the missing boy.

The first thing the team looks for is anyone with a grudge against Luke's father, a man who'd put a lot of tough villains away in his time. A list quickly emerges, but Thorne discovers that ex-DCI Tony Mullen has omitted the name of the most obvious suspect; a man who'd once threatened him and his family, and who, after serving time for his original crime, is now the main suspect in a murder which has been unsolved for four years.

Is this a simple oversight, understandable considering the trauma of his son's disappearance? Or is it something more telling?

Aware that he does not have the luxury of time, Thorne searches desperately for connections and leads, but learns that secrets are as easily buried as bodies, and that assumptions are the enemy of truth.

Love this series but…….

I love this series and been loving Marks narrations, I’m aware he is re-recording the earlier books but I wanted to get on through the series so decided to plough on and listen to this version. Storey was great, narration ok, music … what on Earth!! Totally odd and distracting. Thank god it’s over!

Good but not great.

Excellent writing. Ridiculous instrumental moments throughout. Absolutely no need. Good character. Good plot twist. Shorter than normal.

I had to return audio

I am sorry to say I had to return this audio. I am sure the story would have been great as I love all Mark Billinghams books.
I could not cope with the irritating sound track. You couldn't even call it music. Several times it actually made me jump where it was so loud.
No need for it at all.

Storyline.

Essentially the story was as good as the others in the story. However for me the music was awful. It did not add anything to the book and was irrelevant and irritating. The narrator was ok, not quite as good as Mark Bellingham himself. Always enjoy listening to an author narrate their own books as you hear the characters as they wrote them. Overall it’s ok, if you can get passed the music.

Superb performance

Glennister is outstanding!
I so enjoyed listening to Robert Glennister reading this book, I buy books if I see that Glennister is the one performing them.
He is absolutely smashing as Cormoran Strike in Robert Gailbraith’s books for example.

Music

Great story with plenty of twists. it maybe just me but please get rid of the music it in my opinion and nothing to enhance the storytelling.
