About this listen
If you don't know Simon Scarrow, you don't know Rome!
When the Eagle Hunts is the compelling third novel in Simon Scarrow's best-selling Eagles of the Empire series. For fans of Bernard Cornwell and Conn Iggulden.
Britannia, AD 44. Cato, a thoughtful junior officer in the Roman army, and his commanding centurion, Macro, are simply pawns in Rome's lust to conquer Britain. During the freezing winter, the two men and their legion fight the native savages in hand-to-hand battles that haunt Cato for days after. But in a place full of enemies, the most vicious are the Druids of the Dark Moon; brutal, merciless men who have captured the wife and children of General Plautius himself. So Macro and Cato are given a mission: to travel deep into enemy territory and recover the hostages. If they fail, the fate of the Roman army may just hang in the balance....

Enjoyable story, great performance
Enjoyed the story, especially the details about druid customs in Britain. There were flashes of real horror which were surprising and dark. But the story stretched credibility tbh...and there are some tough parenting tips to be learnt...but I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who's read the first two books!

An enthralling yarn
This is a very enjoyable story, particularly through its second listen. Well narrated by a reader who pitches the different characters well. My only criticism is that for me the reader’s mispronunciation of Cato’s name can be annoying, but overall, David Thorpe is an accomplished reader who brought the story to life.

GREAT STORY!
I must admit this series within the Roman legion just keeps getting better and better. It's good knowing the history, as I am keen to see how the author develops the journey of Carto and Macro by Vespasian's side

Conquest for Britain continues, with added druids
The third and last book in the Audiobook deal of the Macro and Cato series. This book started off from where the last book finished - still in Britain trying to conquer the British. It is winter, so the campaign has stopped until spring. The generals family is en route, but gets shipwrecked and are captured by the Druids. As you can guess by now, the druids are the bad guys this book.
The book can be split into 2 parts. The first is the winter portion of a campaign, with the odd skirmish and plenty of drinking. Its here that we meet up with Boudica, from the Iceni tribe. She has a relationship with Macro and is a major part of this story. This is a young Boudica, so i would imagine we will hear from her again in future books.
The second half of the story sees Macro and Cato, along with Boudica and her cousin in a rescue attempt of the generals family. There are less mass battles here, but some good little skirmishes.
Audiobook: The book was by the same narrator and a fantastic job it was too. I really enjoy these books. Its a shame that the next 2 books are not in audible format - so i will have to purchase then in book form. This is a series that i will certainly continue to read
