About this listen

Best-selling author Simon Scarrow brings the Great Siege of Malta to vivid and unforgettable life in this gripping standalone novel.

Malta, 1565: a vital outpost between the divided nations of Europe and the relentlessly expanding Ottoman Empire. Faced with ferocious attack by a vast Turkish fleet, the knights of the Order of St John fear annihilation.

Amongst those called to assist is disgraced veteran Sir Thomas Barrett. Loyalty and instinct compel him to put the Order above all other concerns, yet his allegiance is divided. At Queen Elizabeth's command, he must search for a hidden scroll, guarded by the knights, that threatens her reign. As Sir Thomas confronts the past that cost him his honour and a secret that has long lain buried, a vast enemy army arrives to lay siege to the island....

An exceptional listen

A brilliant novel from first page to last. Gripping, with an exciting plot that twists and turns throughout. A superb story of romance and war brought to life in one, if not the best of this authors books I have read/heard.

A reminder of the wickedness of men left to their sinful nature and desire for power. And the consequences that follow.

message

I read this yrs ago and is a favourite of Simon scarrow work. it is a great story with real in-depth characters and the gory battles of intense description . Jonathan keeble is a master narrator (Sorry I once disliked him), but the message, and our hero's last letter echoes my personal belief, is one I find incredulous in our modern times. humanity is capable of good and evil, but to call it gods will (which ever God or gods) is blind faith or a poor excuse to commit the bassist atrocities.

Just brilliant

I read this book as a boy - so to be able to go back now and revisit it as a man was a particularly special experience to me. The writing is so brilliant and the performance of the VO artist was just as good - if not better! Can’t wait to read more from Simon Scarrow soon!

What did you like best about this story?

Had no idea of the history behind this and have since done some research and digging myself.

Which character – as performed by Jonathan Keeble – was your favourite?

Decent effort. delivered a really good story with intent.

Any additional comments?

I loved it.

A great book and great narration, as usual from JK. He does go a little "panto villain" occasionally but, I suppose the character voices need to be discernible from each other.
Historically quite accurate too but, I'd expect nothing less from Simon Scarrow.

Gripping and inspiring from beginning to end!

A superbly crafted novel, with a wealth of historic detail. An expressive narration brings to life the characters, their stories and the sacrifices made in C16th century Malta are a true revelation and inspiration.
