Summary
A tense, emotionally charged thriller from a brilliant new voice.
It is the week before Christmas, and the cathedral city of St Albans is blanketed by snow. But beneath the festive lights, darkness is stirring. The frozen body of a young girl is discovered by the ice-covered lake.
The police scramble for clues. A local woman, Jenny, has had visions of what happened the night of the murder. But Jenny is an exhausted new mother whose midnight wanderings pull her ever closer to the lake. Then another girl goes missing, and the community unravels. Neighbour turns against neighbour, and Jenny has no idea who to believe. As Christmas Eve approaches, Jenny discovers a secret about her past - and why she could be key to everything....

Not Very Good
In fact never made it to the end. Badly written, characters are all over the place. Kept on waiting for it to get back to the story. Never did. One of the characters is supposed to be part South African, but is given a very annoying West Indian accent by the reader. Very rare for me to not finish a book, but just couldn't go on. Don't waste a credit on this.

Absolutely loved this book, set in my home town which I have since moved away from but could absolutely picture the lake scenes, perfect detail!

Enjoyable
Good story overall, kept me guessing. I liked the character development so I will probably listen to the next book in the series. The narration was good apart from a few dodgy accents.

Ok but too much overwrought emotion
An ok story that could have shorter if some of descriptions of Jenny’s continuous overwrought emotional state were removed. I felt irritated by her not helped by the narrator’s, at times, screeching delivery. When Jenny’s predicament warranted heightened emotion there had been so much before the impact of the final denouement was lost.

Beautiful
Thus book was beautifully written and read.It caught the intricacy of relationships well and the characters were alive.
I'm not usually a fan of paranormal stuff but this was subtle and well crafted.
read it.

The murder is a mere sideline in this story
The whole story is very slow and more of an observation of post -partum mental fragmentation of a women who is on the verge of breakdown.
Not only are family dynamics a problem, but friends also join in with their own trauma and tears; lots of emotional misery and non communication between main characters. The addition of psychotherapy just about finished it off for me... I found characters weak, too fragile and insubstantial to hold interest and detracted totally from a story which could have been good...Too many pages of weeping, emotional trauma and naval gazing to give credence to plot.
Writing was good but content too drawn out and pretty predictive.
