Summary
They call him the Wolfman - because he takes a bite out of his victims and because they found the first victim in the East End's lonely Wolf Street.
Scotland Yard are anxious to find the killer and Inspector Rebus is drafted in to help. But his Scotland Yard opposite number, George Flight, isn't happy at yet more interference, and Rebus finds himself dealing with racial prejudice as well as the predations of a violent maniac. When Rebus is offered a serial killer profile of the Wolfman by an attractive female psychologist, it's too good an opportunity to miss. But in finding an ally, he may have given his enemies an easy means of attack.

Accents
Narrator makes a brilliant Rebus but does fall down when tackling accents other than Scottish, which initially distracted from the story.

Great dark detective
Rebus in London. James Macpherson's delivery is pitch perfect in this dark tale of murder. Having worked in London, most of the locations are familiar and made this particularly enjoyable. The dark depths of the psycology of not only the killer but the full cast of characters is particularly convincing, and Rankin's commans of this and police procedure makes this a gritty and realistic read.

So good
I read this book years ago and I had forgotten how good Ian Rankin and his creation Rebus is. Not much Edinburgh in this book as the investigation is in London where Rebus has been sent to help the Met in a serial killer investigation. The narrator is perfect and the tension is high. Of course written early 1990s it is of its time with little of the technology we have now but that is not a bad thing as the author can be freer with the plot .

Entertaining listen
I have just started listening to Ian Rankin books and to start with the first few Inspector Rebus books felt a bit simplistic, but the character has grown on me and I think that is in no small part due to James Macpherson’s performance.

Great listen
Found myself drawn in again by Rebus the Gruff. Caring whilst pretending not to. Rankin lays a trail that leads to several red herrings and cul de sacs.
