About this listen

When best-selling author Carrie McClelland visits the windswept ruins of Slains Castle, she is enchanted by the stark and beautiful Scottish landscape. The area is strangely familiar to her but she puts aside her faint sense of unease to begin her new novel, using the castle as her setting, and one of her own ancestors, Sophia, as her heroine.

Then Carrie realizes her writing is taking on a life of its own and the lines between fact and fiction become increasingly blurred. As Sophia's memories draw Carrie more deeply into the intrigue of 1708, she discovers a captivating love story lost in time.

After 300 years, 'Sophia's Secret' must be told.

Characters brought to life!

Very emotionally charged story. Liked the way it flowed between past and present. The narration was excellent and sympathetic to the characters. Highly recommended.

Loved it!

Such an engaging story. I did love the plot and an amazing performance of the narrator. Such shame that I have finished so quickly.

The winter sea

I have not read any of Susanna Kearsleys’s books before. This book The winter sea was absolutely remarkable and I loved it.
It reminded me of the history and amazement of Diana Gabaldons Outlander series and also of Elizabeth Erskines Lady of Hay in parts.
The reader, Rosalyn Landon, was as usual at her best ( she is my favourite narrator) and her voices contributed exceptionally well with the story!
This book is without doubt going to be in my top ten books.
If you like reading historic novels with a romance woven into the story line
Then this book is for you.
I thoroughly recommend it!!
I shall be looking for more books written by this author.

Stunning and Beautiful

a beautifully written historical love story, heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time. I did not want it to end and now it has i doubt I will find anything as good again. Narrated in a style that was so easy to listen to and compelled you to fall in love with the characters. I was transported to a different time.

Awful Narration

I sent this book back and read it on kindle instead. Great book, terrible narration.

Epic story

A fabulous tale transferring from past to present centred around a Scottish castle. Brilliant engaging and well written I loved listening to this.

Great idea.

Enjoyed the way the story of past and present was entwined. Assumed historical events were true as unfamiliar with this point in Scotland's history. A few important historical plot details seemed rushed so needed to go back over scenes to listen more carefully. Otherwise a good listen.p

Cute love story

It started well, but soon it became really soapy. Writing is actually quite good, just not my cup of tea. It has a lot of interesting history information, but that is exactly that - information weaved into a love story. The narrator is good, a very pleasant voice, but the accents are a bit weird. Even I, not a native English speaker, can recognize fake Scottish. It didn't bother me much, but if you are fussy about these things, skip it. Overall it is not bad, if you are fond of the romance genre go for it, you won't be disappointed.

Great story, awful accents

Loved the story, however the narration let it down. The Scottish accents were horrendous and each male character sounded exactly the same. Having lived over 50 years in Scotland I have yet to meet a man who sounds like these characters. A shame because it was a lovely story.
