Summary

A gripping tale of witchcraft and romance, past and present, from the Sunday Times bestselling author…

The parish of Manningtree and Mistley has a dark history. In 1644, Cromwell's Witchfinder General tortured scores of women there, including Liza the herbalist, whose cottage still stands. Some say the spirits of his victims still haunt the old shop on the High Street…

Emma Dickson gave up her high-flying career to live in Liza’s cottage, but as Halloween approaches, visions of a terrible past are driving her to madness. In despair, Emma turns to the local rector for help, but he, too, is in the grip of something inexplicably dangerous…

Great Story pity about the narrator

I would love to be able to listen to the rest of the book, but I couldn't get past a few chapters due to the narrator. She reads in a very staccato fashion, with an unnecessary pause after every 4-5 words, which doesn't contribute to a smooth storytelling experience.

A lovely novel by the great Barbara Erskine

I very much enjoyed this book, a huge improvement on last year's (sorry, hate to be critical). But I have to say the ending was disappointing. I got confused with all the characters, which is why I gave it a 3/5 for story. otherwise I was quite gripped.

A brilliant weave of personalities, spiritual understandings and time travelling historical blending.

Barbara Erskine, for me, writes intriguing stories that continue to question many aspects of being human. What is our essential self and our relationship to life and death? Are we tumbling through lives as time goes by?
But, forget about all the theories!
Barbara writes an excellent novel and this is no exception.

Great story, but I ended up reading the book as I didn’t like the narrator

Hiding from the light

I really liked this audible book. A tale of past and present, light and dark and good over evil. Barbara Erskine knows how to weave a story.
Beth Eyre is a lovely narrator and skilled in bringing the individual characters to life, you know who is who.
Recommend to all who like Barbara’s work or to those who haven’t discovered her yet.

Barbara Erskibe

Sadly not as enthralling as her usual titles.
But I will still await her next book with interest

Good but not great.

BE has done much better than this. Seems to me much if it was stereo typical and dare I say cheap melodrama - we are used to more in depth research and detail from BE. Having just finished I feel somehow disappointed.

Good and bad

I loved the historical side and I'm into paganism. I felt that there were too many characters which made it confusing.
Pagans, Witches and Wiccans do not believe in God or the Devil so I feel there was a major religious error in the writing. Barbara is very good with history so I'm surprised such a mistake was made.
I did love the book but just found some of it annoying. I'd give it 4*

Good story line

too many characters to keep a track, I ‘lost the plot’ especially when listening in bed
