Summary

This number one New York Times best seller is an exceptionally moving story of triumph against all odds set during World War II, from the acclaimed author of Fighting Words.

Ten-year-old Ada has never left her one-room apartment. Her mother is too humiliated by Ada’s twisted foot to let her outside. So when her little brother, Jamie, is shipped out of London to escape the war, Ada doesn’t waste a minute—sneaking out to join him.

So begins a new adventure for Ada, and for Susan Smith, the woman who is forced to take the two kids in. As Ada teaches herself to ride a pony, learns to read and watches for German spies, she begins to trust Susan—and Susan begins to love Ada and Jamie. But in the end, will their bond be enough to hold them together through wartime? Or will Ada and her brother fall back into the cruel hands of their mother?

Set during one of the most explosive periods in world history, this amazing story is equal parts adventure and a moving tale of family, identity and the fire of self-worth that can, when fed, burn brightly in all of us.

Critic reviews

"Ada's voice is brisk and honest; her dawning realizations are made all the more poignant for their simplicity." (Kirkus Reviews)

Involving, poignant, nuanced.... This is a feel-good story, but an earned one...distinct and powerful in its own right." (The Horn Book, starred review)

"Achingly lovely.... Nuanced and emotionally acute." (The Wall Street Journal)

The saddest but happiest story

I liked when it goes from sad to happy and it was really happy and sad in the end and I definitely recommend this book because everyone was happy but they had lost everything and that’s love
