About this listen

A sci-fantasy/psychological epic in a brutal world filled with compelling characters, intense action, and a kingdom to save.

The deadliest blades are not made of steel....

When Jaks almost kills another soldier with his volatile magic, he is forced to tread the fearful path of the electromancer. Succeed, he will be the first in a generation. Fail, he will lose everything.

As the ruthless king of Voros invades the land with axe warriors, skyships and dragons, Jaks and his battlemage master begin a quest to train his powers and uncover a potent artifact that could halt the rampaging enemy.

On their journey through dangerous lands, they are accompanied by a sharp-eyed ranger, a lethal assassin, and a mysterious foreigner with unworldly weapons.

However, nothing is simple when Jaks’ greatest adversary is much closer than he knows.

Trigger warnings: violence, abuse, dark themes.

Deftly blends Fantasy/Magic with SciFi like Star Ocean

It felt fortuitous that when I started reading this book, I was also playing for the first time the star Ocean video games. This series of books is interesting because it deafly blends Science Fiction and fantasy/magic. It’s closer to the mediaeval like world similar to Game of Thrones and wall has some very dark and gruesome elements. It’s not quite as morose as that series having a lot more of an adventure feel to it, the characters have interesting back stories and are fairly well developed with perhaps the second book being a lot stronger than the first, but when you’re reading it as a single book in this complete collection I think it’s really quite entertaining.

I think the authors done a great job of this book. The magic system is pretty well introduced and fairly simplistic. He doesn’t want to get bogged down in details. In fact it doesn’t really do it at all if anything, I wish it had had a little more development, but there’s a lot to get through in this book , especially when you’re combining Science Fiction and fantasy from influences are clearly things like Star Trek and Game of Thrones in the same setting.

Highly recommend this book for who won a really interesting adventure with some very compelling characters and some unique developments in both setting and Story.

Also, the narrator is absolutely excellent. I would love to hear more books read by this guy as he does an incredible job, mixing accents invoices and having distinct sounds for each character.
