About this listen

A moving, funny, heartwarming tale of love and friendship, for anyone who loved The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, The Keeper of Lost Things and Three Things about Elsie.

It's never too late to grow old disgracefully....

The life of 79-year-old pensioner Peggy Smart is as beige as the décor in her retirement village. Her week revolves around aqua aerobics and appointments with her doctor. The highlight of Peggy's day is watching her neighbour Brian head out for his morning swim.

Peggy dreams of inviting the handsome widower - treasurer of the Residents' Committee and one of the few eligible men in the village - to an intimate dinner. But why would an educated man like Brian, a chartered accountant no less, look twice at Peggy? As a woman of a certain age, she fears she has become invisible, even to men in their 80s.

But a chance encounter with an old school friend she hasn't seen in five decades - the glamorous fashionista Angie Valentine - sets Peggy on an unexpected journey of self-discovery.

Can she channel her 'inner Helen Mirren' and find love and friendship in her twilight years?

Lovely story, shame about narrator.

A really lovely story of friendship and ageing. Sadly the narrator’s strident, and at times, hysterical voice detracted from the story itself. At times I felt I couldn’t listen to her voice any more but I wanted to know what was happening to Peggy and Angie so gritted my teeth and ploughed on. Perhaps a book better read than listened to.

Great story

Laugh out loud moments along with a peak at life after work! I loved it especially Peggy’s misappropriation of words. A feel good book

A little bit different. Loved it.

Brilliantly written and read.
Made me feel less scared about getting old. 😂
Friendships are vital and can be as good, if not better than family.

Simply wonderful!

If you like Three Things About Elsie and Eleanor Oliphant you’ll love this book! A touching, funny, reflective and uplifting story of friendship, growing older (disgracefully!) and so much more!! I absolutely loved this book and all of the characters and was so sad when it finished.

I did find the narration average, I actually increased the speed (something I never do!) to 1.25 and that was much better.

I’d recommend this to everyone!! As a 40 year old i chuckled out loud at the way Peggy’s children treat her - relating to my own mum!

Delightful

A delightful story of love, friendship and the trials and tribulations of the older generation.

I was particularly drawn to the story as the main character Peggy is the same age as my Mum. Coincidentally, it turned out that her fictional birthday falls on the same day as my Mum’s!

A book staring very elderly people! How refreshing!

The age of invisibility for elderly women has undeniably increased over the past decade, but it is still the fact that the over 75’s are largely seen as frail and vulnerable. This lovely story debunks that line without romanticising the challenges of aging. I loved it!

Loved it!

Very funny, also quite touching in many parts but a good read about the foibles of mature living.

An amazing read

I loved this book and didn't want it to end. Having looked after my mum for years, there were so many parallels that either made me laugh out loud whilst at the same time brought me to tears. I listed on audio and my mum read it and we both loved it. Funny, happy, sad and poignant.
