About this listen

THE NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER A heartbreaking read of loss and hope from Laura Pearson

The list he left had just one item on it. Or, at least, it did at first…

Mabel Beaumont’s husband Arthur loved lists. He’d leave them for her everywhere. ‘Remember: eggs, butter, sugar’. ‘I love you: today, tomorrow, always’.

But now Arthur is gone. He died: softly, gently, not making a fuss. But he’s still left her a list. This one has just one item on it though: ‘Find D’.

Mabel feels sure she knows what it means. She must track down her best friend Dot, who she hasn’t seen since the fateful day she left more than sixty years ago.

It seems impossible. She doesn’t even know if Dot’s still alive. Also, every person Mabel talks to seems to need help first, with missing husbands, daughters, parents. Mabel finds her list is just getting longer, and she’s still no closer to finding Dot.

What she doesn’t know is that her list isn’t just about finding her old friend. And that if she can admit the secrets of the past, maybe she could even find happiness again…

A completely heartbreaking, beautiful, uplifting story, guaranteed to make you smile but also make you cry. Perfect for fans of A Man Called Ove, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, and The Keeper of Stories.

A lovely listen

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book as it was not my usual thing. It was lovely. The quest for a lost love is something many of us do even if it’s only in our minds. Beautifully narrated. Glad I used a credit which you can’t always say!

fantastic, finished in 2 days

Written beautifully. I found myself completely lost in the story. The characters and atmosphere are described well, I found myself thinking about what would happen next and who it would involve. I was almost heartbroken when I thought the story would go one way, then it went another. It's a little emotional, but over all, fantastic!

A lovely glimpse into the importance of friendship ❤️

This story was quite emotive, telling the story of 86 year old Mabel and of all the love and heartache she'd faced throughout her life. There are a few bits that slightly jarred when reading - it felt like drama for the sake of it - when actually the story itself was strong enough anyway. Loved the twisting story of the past mixed with the new friendships Mabel made. Overall an easy listen and a nice tale!

Misunderstandings can last a lifetime

Although the lady narrator has an authentic mid eighty year old voice it grates rather to this listenership’s ear. The loss of feminine timbre is rough and her version of male voices is also weird and unattractive. This book may be better read than audio.

Bittersweet

Well read and engaging story although irritating detail missed in the editing - one of the characters manages to impregnate his girlfriend although he had had a vasectomy.
