About this listen
When the body of a man is discovered in woodlands outside Manchester, a ten-year missing-persons investigation can finally be filed away. But this was no ordinary death: gagged, bound and buried alive, he was the victim of a sophisticated and sadistic killer. And there is something else that has the National Crime Agency puzzled. A single character carved into a nearby tree.
Newly promoted to the NCA's Behavioural Sciences Unit, Senior Investigator Joanne Stuart is determined to hunt down the perpetrator. Just as Jo's investigation begins to reveal links with other disappearances, there is another murder. This is no longer a cold case; she is dealing with the escalating violence of a chilling serial killer.
Stepping into a sinister world of secrets, symbols, and rituals, Jo will have to confront the legacy of her own past and the violent memories that lurk there if she is going to solve this case. But at what cost?

Stilted
Really want to like this author as the books are set in Manchester. However this is yet another disappointment. Narration was poor with bad accents. Had a promising start but it dwindled into a stilted, bland narrative with no build up of intrigue. Disappointed

The Pick, the Spade and the Crow
Not a bad storyline bit drawn out though, took a while to get into it made hard because narration was awful almost monotone, did not bring out the characters in any way ,but, with perseverance I listened until the end. Would do this book more justice if it were to be narrated by someone more proficient I have enjoyed many books written by Bill Rogers.!

Good story
I enjoyed the gradual build up of the case and the clues as they were discovered. Didn't feel that I knew the characters apart from the central one. The narrative was clear although for some reason I found it annoying at first.

Good police procedural
I was a bit put off my the narrator and for the first time I considered turning off and not finishing. It was an odd voice more suited to a ghost story, strangely like a husky whisper
Story was good if a little inflated by explanations of procedures

Cannot listen to this computer generated version
Probably the worst recording I’ve heard. Talks to fast even if I slow it down. Sounds like it’s fully computer generated with no emotion at all.
Totally unlistenable. Wasted my money.

Spoiled by the narrator
The worst reader I have heard on the many many books I have listened through audible. I find the constant mispronouncing of basic text annoying at best. It is important narrators learn to pronounce technical language accurately. Two examples I recall (I listened to this a few weeks ago) are ISA said as the three individual letters and BTec similarly read as the individual letters. Others were just ordinary words regularly mispronounced. Much as I like this author - I have read or listened to most of his books - I will not listen again unless the narrator changes.

most annoying voice of all time.
I really enjoyed reading this book a year or so ago. I decided to download the audible narration for my daily commute. I should have downloaded the sample first as the narrator has possibly the single most annoying voice of all time. Think Elmer Fudd crossed with Hunny Bunny from Pulp Fiction and you're almost there. I turned it off and deleted the book from my phone inside of 10 minutes. just an awful narration of a pretty good novel.
