Summary

I’m out on an early morning dog walk when I find the body. It’s Harry, the man I was dating. It should be the worst thing that has ever happened to me.... But it has happened to me before.

Six months ago I found the body of Ash, another man I’d been seeing. The police arrested me, and the trauma nearly destroyed me. I moved back home and changed my life.

Now, it’s a bright sunny morning, the air is fresh, and I’m finally feeling like I can move on. I can’t wait for my second date with Harry....

Then my rescue dog starts barking.

I follow the sound to see what he’s found, and then I realize what it is. Who it is. I back away, trembling.

My heart pounding, I call the police and wait for them to come.

But I don't tell them I recognise the dead man. If I did, I know I’d be their number one suspect.

How could this have happened to me again?

Who is doing this? Will I be next? And worst of all: Is it my fault?

Because there are things nobody knows about me....

A psychological thriller that will keep you gripped and gasping. Perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell, Paula Hawkins, and Gillian Flynn.

Surprised I finished

Irritating main character with zero appeal, predictable plot twist which I worked out very early on and weak writing.

I finished the book mainly due to me hoping that there was going to be a last minute twist I didn’t see coming, there wasn’t.

Great narration though.

Compelling and entertaining

Strong characters, a twisty plot and a vivid sense of place made this thriller a stand-out listen. Really good on audio, would recommend.

well narrated but far fetched

the story started well and I enjoyed it, but the plot descended into ridiculousness and lost believability. I enjoyed the narration.

Confusing mixture of human and canine characters

With the caveat that I listened to this on an intercontinental flight, which may have affected my concentration, I found the mystery obfuscated by confusion over who was a dog, and who was a person. The author could have mitigated against this by using far more doggy names for the canine members of the cast. The villian was easy to guess even in my jet lagged state. I did finish it though.

Five Star Listen!

Such a riveting listen, had me hooked from the start. So refreshing to have a plot completely different from the rest, original story, characters, settings, no cliches. The main character, Caz, is fun and likeable with a realistic touch of malice for past wrongs which are always overcome by her true kind personality. She's feisty, with a soft centre. She works with dogs, which is an added interest because I do too, and it seems the author understands dogs, because she draws their personalities so well.
The narrator is brilliant and perfectly interprets Caz, giving the right amount of tension, apprehension, self doubt, warmth, but is equally reflects the other characters, good and bad.
On a side note, it's so good to find a book not inhabited by kids! So many crime or psychological thrillers seem to be written by young mums who want to write about what they know, which is the kids experience. They're either lost, abducted, murdered, missing, being obnoxious, all in the same vein. But here we have dogs! So refreshing!

Brilliant in every way, don't miss out on this one

Excellent storyline, best choice of narration. Always look out for a good narrator. It can make or break an Audible Read. The combination between Julia Crouch's new novel and Sarah Durham's performance made this come to life. I'm surprised nobody has bothered to give any reviews. Ok it's quite an easy listen not too complex but definitely a 'one more chapter listen.' That kept me entertained from the very first chapter. In fact I stayed awake all night listening, and I was still trying to work it all out....until eventually I did. I write this not to complain, but because I was in fact so eager to see if I had guessed correctly, through the twists and turns the book presented me with. There were in my opinion just the correct amount of characters all with evolving back stories. I wasn't looking for anything too complicated as I am at the back end of the dreaded covid virus, which I had particularly bad this time around. So I couldn't sleep, but wanted something to take my mind off now terrible I have been feeling and concentrate on just the right type of psychological thriller and this one ticked all the boxes for me!! Just give it a go I was pleasantly surprised and hope you will be too. I don't give spoilers and understand we all have our own opinions on what we choose to read or listen to on Audible. Unless I thought it was an absolutely waste of money I probably wouldn't have left a review at all. Although I'm guilty of not leaving many reviews, which is because I just don't normally write any, and that's a shame. As there are many books by authors that I have thoroughly enjoyed and have deserved good reviews from myself. It's always nice to get other readers opinions on a listen and the feedback should be left. If not for us, the readers but as a mark of respect, for the authors and narrators, who have put so much effort into creating something to be enjoyed. Any negative feedback can be taken as positive criticism. Which I'm a great believer in, so as to help all authors improve if needed. Final note. I can write in paragraphs but I've been up all night enjoying this novel along with my cough and am now very tired. Remember some books are meant to be quite far fetched..... Wouldn't be complete escapism if they weren't....and maybe you should be reading or listening to something more like a True Crime ....if there is such a thing as a real true true crime or fact proven based pieces of work that can be 100% guaranteed. I'm not so sure there actually is. Life is one big story for everyone. Good or bad. We are fed the information and what we choose to believe is down to each individual. So let's not knock any upcoming or established author for being far fetched in their writing. I really don't like that terminology. Escapism is good, far fetched is sometimes good. After all that is going on with the world today, what harm to just try to forget for a moment before jumping back in to 'reality?' to try to make this a better world to live in for everyone and future generations.

Equally great narration & story

Loved it all. One of those I didn’t want to end. Already looking up other books by the same author.

Not my cup of tea, more like an episode of Lassie

I just couldn’t get past how incredibly irritating the main character was, very unrealistic, particularly as her dog seemed to have better intuition and common sense than any of the people. More like an episode of Lassie. Certainly close on silly.
Only bonus really was the main twist but even that had flaws. Sorry
