Critic reviews

Enthralling ... Read 15 pages, and you will find yourself captivated; read 30 and you will find yourself taken prisoner and reading late into the night. It had the vividness that only epic works of fantasy and imagination can achieve. What else can I say? This: read this book and the ordinary world disappears (Stephen King)
Justin Cronin has written a wild, headlong, sweeping extravaganza of a novel. The Passage is the literary equivalent of a unicorn: a bona fide thriller that is sharply written, deeply humane, ablaze with big ideas, and absolutely impossible to put down (Jennifer Egan, author of A Visit from the Goon Squad)

Haunting

This reminded me of a Stephen King novel. A very atmospheric dystopian novel that disturbs and haunts you long afterwards. Edward Herrmann is a joy to listen to. I don't often listen to the abridged versions of audiobooks, but I'm glad I did in this case - I think this was just right and can't imagine what more material could add to the story.

Resident Evil but better !!!!

Just finished the abridged version of this book .. I was actually late for work sitting in the car park waiting to hear the last 15 mins. It seems to have brought together elements of a number of sci fi horrors together with a good story to explain WHY?, but the whole thing is a success and well worth the Listen ..I'm even thinking of buying the unabridged version to do it all again

Good writing, well read, but story not for me

This book came highly-recommended by a friend who positively raved about it and couldn't wait for the sequel. So it might be me! I could appreciate the quality of both the narrative and the narration, but the story itself was a big disappointment. Suspension of disbelief never quite happened enough for me to sustain interest in the incredible plot.

Not what I was expecting but still a good listen.

I downloaded this after getting engrossed in the TV series of the same name expecting to hear about Amy and Brad but it's nothing like the dramatisation I am watching. I still enjoyed and will continue with the rest of the series.

Absolutely stunning

This book captured my imagination completely. Everything about it enthralls, from the intricate plot, to the complex characters to the outside chance that this is a scenario that could feasibly happen. Hermann's narration is one of the best I've ever heard, and did justice to a superb work of fiction. Highly recommended, even if fantasy stories are not your norm.

Absorbing

I normally buy unabridged versions of audio-books as I prefer to listen to all an authors words not just what an editor decides so I was slightly miffed to realise I had bought the abridged version of The Passage. I have, however read some reviews that the book is perhaps too long. The abridged version though really keeps a great pace and I found it incredibly difficult to stop listening. The story is just fantastic with wonderful characters and I cant wait for Justin Cronin to write the rest of the trilogy.

Decent Story.

Pretty good story with fairly well defined characters and very good narration.
Sadly, the US military and all the silly "heroic" empty rhetoric that goes with them, in certain fiction, are shoehorned in. The novel is made less by this, as it is not necessary to the story in any way.
I stopped listening at that point, I lost respect for the author.
