About this listen

"The Near Witch" is only an old story told to frighten children.

If the wind calls at night, you must not listen. The wind is lonely and always looking for company.

There are no strangers in the town of Near.

These are the truths that Lexi has heard all her life.

But when an actual stranger, a boy who seems to fade like smoke, appears outside her home on the moor at night, she knows that at least one of these sayings is no longer true.

The next night, the children of Near start disappearing from their beds, and the mysterious boy falls under suspicion.

As the hunt for the children intensifies, so does Lexi's need to know about the witch that just might be more than a bedtime story, about the wind that seems to speak through the walls at night, and about the history of this nameless boy.

Part fairy tale, part love story, Victoria Schwab's debut novel is entirely original yet achingly familiar: a song you heard long ago, a whisper carried by the wind, and a dream you won't soon forget.

This new edition of The Near Witch also included the in-universe short story "The Ash-Born Boy" and a never-before-seen introduction from V. E. Schwab.

Can't bare the Narrator's voice

As with every other reviewer, I have to agree that this book is ruined by the narration. I can't even rate the story properly as I was unable to listen far enough into it to gauge it accurately.
I am hugely disappointed as I have enjoyed many of V.E. Schwab's books. I'll have to read this myself.

An ok read

I think this might be one I'd rather read instead of listen to, the performance isn't awful but it didn't enthrall me either.

terrible narration

Well firstly I think I deserve some kind of medal 🏅for perseverance and completing this story. The only reason I did was because the actual story was great but dear lord the narration was an absolute chore to listen to. I'm glad I didn't spend my monthly credit on it!

narrator

I really really wanted to listen to this, but yet again another terrible narration ruining the story. the emphasis on random words makes it sound as though she's trying to read in a melody or rhyme. couldn't finish although I really hoped to! such a shame as I love VE Schwab books!

Excellent book, emotionless robot for a narrator

The narrator slowly killed me and it was a battle to finish it. It was as if you were listening to an emotionless robot. Such a shame when the book is very good.

couldn't follow the narration style

The intonation of the narrator was so consistent, it was like listening to an AI read. It messed.uo sentences with weird pauses that spoiled the flow of the text so you had to rethink the sentence yourself to make it make sense.

Bad.

No description on any scene or location. Poor plot with all characters blending together as all flat as each other. Couldn't finish it.

Don't judge the book by its narrator.

I don't often review books on Audible, but I had to with this one. the story is as good as anything else written by Schwab, but the narrator uses a very strange cadence for virtually every sentence, which was incredibly off-putting. The strange thing is when it came to the dialogue it wasn't there, and when I've gone and listened to samples of other books she has narrated it also doesn't seem to be there, so it seems as if it was a stylistic choice by the narrator. it's so disappointing that this audiobook lets down the story. If the people in charge of these things see this, I implore you to rerecord this!
