Summary

Long-listed, Barnes and Noble Best New Books of the Year 2023

Veteran narrators Michael Kramer and Kate Reading return to this fantastical world, along with a new POV portrayed by Marisa Calin.

"As the threads converge, all three narrators strive to remain as consistent as possible to each other's stylistic choices, creating a nearly flawless whole."- AudioFile

V. E. Schwab, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, opens another door to a new fantasy series set in the dazzling world of Shades of Magic.

Prepare for tangled schemes and perilous adventures with friends old and new in The Fragile Threads of Power.

Once, there were four worlds, nestled like pages in a book, each pulsing with fantastical power and connected by a single city: London. Until the magic grew too fast and forced the worlds to seal the doors between them in a desperate gamble to protect their own. The few magicians who could still open the doors grew more rare as time passed and now, only three Antari are known in recent memory—Kell Maresh of Red London, Delilah Bard of Grey London, and Holland Vosijk, of White London.

But barely a glimpse of them have been seen in the last seven years—and a new Antari named Kosika has appeared in White London, taking the throne in Holland's absence. The young queen is willing to feed her city with blood, including her own—but her growing religious fervor has the potential to drown it instead.

And back in Red London, King Rhy Maresh is threatened by a rising rebellion, one determined to correct the balance of power by razing the throne entirely.

These two royals from very different empires now face very similar struggles: how to keep their crowns—and their own heads.

Amidst this tapestry of old friends and new enemies, a girl with an unusual magical ability comes into possession of a device that could change the fate of all four worlds.

Her name is Tes, and she's the only one who can bring them together—or unravel it all.

Not sure if I'd go with Audiobook for this one

I liked the book, but the narrators' voices felt much older than the actual characters, so it felt very weird.

Epic

A little confusing at first flitting here and there but what an imagination and what a great story

No less than expected

I would expect no less than a masterpiece from Victoria Schwab. Wasn’t disappointed. A truly amazing continuation of the narrative.

Great story - great characters

Two of the performers read this beautifully, one of them as though she was about to run out of oxygen. I had to keep slowing down the read rate when it came to her chapters and then increase it back up for the other two.

Interesting new series

Great story with new characters and I was thoroughly lost in the story as usual with VE Scwab's books. Two of the readers were engaging but the third reader often made me wonder why the need for the great rush of her words. I found the rush of word slightly off putting

Fantastic plot but very inconsistent narrators

I love the story but the narrators made it difficult to listen to to the point I wish I'd just read the book. There were three different narrators, two American and one English, but the whole the American ones were pretty good, their British accents were not and really toin me out of the story. The British narrator was also good but sounded like she was on 2x speed, normally this wouldn't bother me as I'd listen on a lower speed but as it frequently swapped narrators and tone of the America ones spike really slowly, it meant I constantly had to change the speed instead of just enjoying the story

Lost its magic

Dull with little or no authentic sense of place. Narrators also seemed incongruous to the setting

Disappointing

I can’t decide if this book is ruined by the narration or just is not a gripping story. I usually love Schwab’s writing so not sure what’s going on. I might even not finish. The male narrator is the worst.
