About this listen
A young man and his axe, along with a magical life he never asked for....
Larek Holsten is different from most people living in the Kingdom of Androthe, where his seven-foot-tall frame is looked at with suspicion and anger from its shorter residents; but as long as it helps him become the best Logger he can be, he doesn’t let it bother him all that much. He and his best friend, an axe with a powerful Fusion that causes it to become sharper and stronger than a normal tool, are feared by the trees in the magical forest north of his home, as he can fell the quickly growing monoliths faster than anyone else in the community.
Unfortunately, after visiting the local village, a deliberate misunderstanding lands Larek in trouble; as a result, he is taken away from his family and the only home he has ever known. Along the way, his dormant magical potential is discovered by those more knowledgeable than him, and he is ordered to attend some sort of academy for Mages.
The problem? Contrary to many who might jump at the chance of wielding powerful magic to fight the monsters that threaten the towns and cities around the Kingdom, Larek has absolutely no desire to become a Mage, especially when he has no choice in the matter. All he wants is to be allowed to return home to his family and to chop down the trees in the Rushwood Forest.
But once he discovers a unique talent that stems from his newly unlocked latent power, he might just have to stick around to see what he can do....
This weak-to-strong MC story contains LitRPG elements such as character progression and statistics, as well as a heavy crafting emphasis. No explicit sexual content or harems.

No dungeon but still lots of story
Great listen, not going to say much as I don’t want to spoil what happens but I can’t wait until the next part

feels like harry potter in gaming mode
I don't know if my title makes sense but this book reminded me of the first harry potter book where you get the classes description and adventure.
I'm so looking forward to book 2 and see a lot of possibilities for this story to continue.
There are a lot of stat references but they do add to this story. Often it's just a summary or a level up notification so it it's like next chapter stat overview.. and then a rambling of stats and numbers.
The story has a nice pace and I love the voice they chose for the main charachter. There is friendship and only a sprinkle, a nudge, a hint of romance if I can even call it romance.
so please give it a try cause it will be a nice, relaxing, funny and entertaining listen :)

Top tier LitRPG
It’s clear to me that Mr. Brooks writes in a way (and a genre) that I enjoy. It’s also clear that Miles Meili is a narrator that I can listen to over and over.
But this book offered something different from the usual dungeon core fun that the author is well known for, and very talented at.
This is a LitRPG… with stats!
Larek is a big lumberjack, though finds himself on the end of some rotten luck and is whisked away to a magical academy (best trope ever). While there he discovers that he has the ability to create fusions (essentially enchantments).
Enchantments are the name of the game for this book and are detailed exactly how you would want them to be - in depth.
The enchanting system is a multipart process depending on multiple skills and stats, and it’s very nice to see that it isn’t just a ‘you get the skill and you can do it’ kind of thing. It’s very clear that the author’s previous genre focus has lent itself very well to this kind of system, because it is detailed, in depth and makes a lot of sense.
Larek is very OP, though it’s balanced by the fact that he’s OP at making fusions, but not much else. He’s big and strong, but generally the enemies we see are better fought with magic and by spellcasters - which he isn’t (this isn’t always the case).
I found myself wanting more and more as the book went on and there was less and less to come - which is exactly how it should be!
I’m really looking forward to book 2 in this series, a great transition from Dungeon Core to LitRPG from Jonathan Brooks!

loved it! I want more of it! Not heavy on stats at all and such a lovable main character. Keep up the good work. The narration done by Miles is splendid!

Incredible
We knew Jonathan Brooks as a King od dungeone core books, but this time there is no dungeons. We are getting weak to strong MC, uncommon magic system , plot twists and more.

The story i did not know i wanted
This story is one of the better once I have heard. I really like the whole concept of fusion and crafting. This book picks some of the best thinks I like from the whole LITRPG world. The story is easy to follow, and I think it is a great book for new readers to the LITRPG world. I have an active imagination and this books details make it a dream for me to just lie down on the bed and follow the narrator throughout the story. I have only one thing I was not sure about and that is the voice of the narrator. It was sometime hard to remember the age of the MC and core characters. The narrator did a good job. But would wish the voice was a bit younger. But otherwise, I can´t wait to hear what happens next.

Good world and magic, terrible characters
the world is decent and the magic system is interesting enough but the main character is incredibly boring, definitely get what the author is going for but it's just not done that well, on top of that many other characters make very strange decisions seemingly out of nowhere that don't feel natural for how that character has been so far. will definitely try the next one but definitely has it's problems

Planning on picking up book 2
While Jonathan Brooks well known for his Dungeon Core books this change of pace from his standard fair is well done.
While the narrator did a good job i personally did not like the voice chosen for the main character but the other voices were good.

Struggling with this to start but got better.
I’ve listened to probably most of the big LitRPG titles on Audible and there are some stunning series out there so have a lot of listening time with LitRPG.
This book takes a very long time to get going and is pretty dull to start. There is some questionable writing at first and some terrible characters but as the crafting gets going, the story gets a lot better. So much so that I felt compelled to vent and write a review part way through as I was so frustrated with the book. I’ve now amended this several times. I’m now hooked with 2hrs to go.
The biggest problem I had is the narration of the character voices. The MC is just SO dumb at first that I nearly stopped listening and returned the book. Luckily I’ve held on as there was a strong strand of “what happens next” to keep me going.
MC’s roommate is probably the worst voice which sounds like a five-year-old voice with a lisp and very annoying mannerisms. I’ve kind of got used to it but still find myself telling him to shut up out loud 🤣
The narration starts poorly. The general narration is ok to start but I think gets better through the book. The MC narration definitely gets better as his skill in talking improves. I get what both the writer and narrator were doing but it still grates so much to start, to the point I nearly gave up with it.
The magic and crafting is very detailed and this adds a lot to the believability. One of the strongest elements of the story. The stat readouts are done with a very light touch so don’t get in the way. Some other books are really bad at this and have near constant readouts. One of the troubles with a narrated book vs printed where you can just skip it if not interested.
So a mixed bag for me - terrible to start with but enough of a story to keep me going with narration that gets much better.
Not sure if it’s deliberate but there are also multiple occasions of MC holding his “best friend” in his hand! Rather odd. Maybe just my warped sense of humour.
