About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin

Now a major TV series directed by Brian Kirk and starring Eddie Redmayne!

One of the most celebrated thrillers ever written, The Day of the Jackal is the exhilarating story of the struggle to catch a killer before it's too late.

1963. An anonymous Englishman is hired by the Operations Chief of French terrorist organisation O.A.S. to murder the French president, General Charles de Gaulle. A failed attempt in the previous year means the target will be nearly impossible to reach.

Only one man could do the job: an assassin of legendary talent known only as The Jackal.

This remorseless and deadly killer must be stopped. But he is a man without a name, without an identity; a lethal spectre.

How can you stop an assassin nobody can identify? The task falls to the best detective in France - and the price of failure is unthinkable . . .

'As gripping now as it was 50 years ago' THE TIMES
'Masterful suspense . . . The Day of the Jackal changed the shape of popular fiction from the moment it was finished' BEN MACINTYRE
'In a class by itself. Unputdownable' SUNDAY TIMES

Great story

Great story and characters, well narrated. My only criticism would be the unnecessary sexual content which at some points was actually a bit comical, shame because its a great story otherwise.

As enjoyable to listen to today as it was to read in my youth. A truly seminal work in the thriller genre from a master story teller

great story brilliantly read.

I first saw the film and thought that was great, but the full story is just so much better.

greAt character development, twists and turns and superb build up to the finale. The superb narration really brought that out and made it one of audio books you couldn'tstop listening to

An absolute classic, Best Audiobook purchase yet

One of the best purchases I have made, recommended to me by Robert Harris.
I was staying In Egletons in France and found the book by my bed and decided to purchase the audiobook and was not dissapointed.
David Rintoul is a fantastic reader I have also listened to his performance of an officer and a spy and he is exceptionally good, the pace of the book never slows and Found i could not stop listening!
At the end of the book I clapped my hands together and shouted out loud ' YES! that was a great book'
I sometimes wish I could wipe my memory of the book at the end and listen all over again And this is certainly one of those books, ill be listeni g to it agai n in a few years time and meanwhile I will be seeking out more books by Frederick Forsyth and more books read by the excellent 'David Rintoul'

The working of an assassin

Excellent thriller bringing fiction into the factually possible. The planning, plotting and investigative details are beautifully interwoven.
A real anti hero who you are kind of rooting for. Forsyth at his brilliant best.
