Summary

From master storyteller Frederick Forsyth - best-selling author of The Day of the Jackal and The Odessa File - comes this collection of five suspenseful gems.

Justice does not always come easily, and it comes in many guises. On the seedier side of London, a shopkeeper witnesses a brutal beating in “The Veteran” (read by Patrick Macnee). In a better neighborhood, a famous London auction house is scammed in “The Art of the Matter” (also read by Macnee). The additional stories recount a persecution in 16th century Sienna (“The Miracle” - read by Christopher Cazenove), a mid-flight drug smuggling heist (“The Citizen” - also read by Macnee), and the lone survivor of Custer's Last Stand (“Whispering Wind” - read by Bruce Boxleitner). Mixing together the elements of great suspense - revenge, mystery, murder and deception - this collection is Forsyth at his best.

Not as good as No Combacks

Not bad, but a disappointment after his earlier No Comebacks collection of short stories. These I found more predictable, particularly The Veteran which amounted to no more than a lengthier rehash of a story in the earlier collection, meaning the ending offered no surprise at all.
Worth a listen nonetheless, but if you want short stories by Forsyth I would recommend the earlier collection.

The last story about the frontiers man

Fredrick Fforsyth is a master story teller and his works come to life with a good narator

The kind of book that one listens to more than onc

I have always enjoyed Frederick Forsyth's longer books but had not read any of his short stories which are quite different. I was amazed at the variety of stories that he wrote but it was great fun listening to them. Most of them I listened to more than once having missed little bits the first time round. I so enjoyed them. Thank you!

Excellent - thoroughly engrossing and enjoyable

I wasn’t sure I would enjoy this, but it really does hit the spot! The stories are all very different and all very engaging; couldn’t put it down until finished.

The veteran

Good listen especially the last short story which was a very clever, inspiring tale. Frederick Forsyth at his best.

Great collection marred by narration

Usual excellent collection you’d expect from the master storyteller, only marred slightly by the almost impenetrable narration by Mcnee. He sounds so old he can barely form the words and his character voices are all ultra slow drawling like something you’d expect in a deathbed confession

Listened to this book on Holiday

Would you listen to The Veteran: Five Heart-Stopping Stories again? Why?

Five stories unfold in very different ways. Kept me tuned in to the MP3 player and my wife to.

What other book might you compare The Veteran: Five Heart-Stopping Stories to, and why?

None of Frederick Forsyths as the stories are so different and as I do not usually listen or read short stories I can only say that its worth your time to try a read or listen. Oh the stories are not that short either !

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Variety of the narrators telling of the stories.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No not at all, this is a book thats perfect for holiday listening or even a bed time read. Great for sitting by the Pool or laying on the beach after an energetic swim/snorkel. Or if you happen to be in America turn off that dreadfull TV.

Any additional comments?

These stories are quite gripping definately worth while.
