Summary

This book has been adapted for audio and is partly dramatised.

"The dog was lying on the grass in the middle of the lawn in front of Mrs Shears' house. It looked as if it was running on its side, the way dogs run when they think they are chasing a cat in a dream. But the dog was not running or asleep. The dog was dead. There was a garden fork sticking out of the dog."

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is a murder mystery novel like no other. The detective, and narrator, is Christopher Boone. Christopher is fifteen and has Asperger's, a form of autism. He knows a very great deal about maths and very little about human beings. He loves lists, patterns, and the truth. He hates the colours yellow and brown and being touched. He has never gone further than the end of the road on his own, but when he finds a neighbour's dog murdered he sets out on a terrifying journey which will turn his whole world upside down.

Please Note: this title starts at Chapter 2. The main character has a preference for prime numbers, so he numbers his chapters according to primes: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11 etc.

An excellent book

I had this book recommended by a friend, although she had read it hard copy rather than the audio version. I was somewhat wary of the book to be honest as I have an autistic son, and wondered how exactly it would unfold, would it make those who suffer from autism sound like weirdos? Would it just caricature them? Instead what I got was a superb piece of writing which gives anyone who does not know someone who is autistic a view of the world they try to make sense of in a sensitive manner. The book isn't really there to explore autism but does give a perspective that non-sufferers can understand. I can identify with the characters that are well written and believable and I found myself really caring for the them and wanting things to work out, for my money the true mark of a writer is how good they are in creating engaging characters and I must admit I felt that Mark Haddon excels in this. Any audiobook is only as good as the narrator and I felt that Ben Tibber was first class. Thanks to both the author and narrator, I really enjoyed this book.

The curious incident of the dog

As an autistic adult to listen to and relate to this child’s story telling was amazing x

Not what I expected

This book is really very interesting, I have an autistic grandson - and it is really fascinating to hear about the way that the autistic mind works. I recognised so much of this child's behaviour.

I find it fascinating that the author can be SO aware of this mindset, he must have close experience.

I do realise that there was no mention of autism in the novel, but it is apparent that this is the factor involved.

Amazing book!

I listened to this with a student at a secondary school during the 2021 UK lockdown and we both loved it!.

Honestly one of the best books I have ever read

"Amazing, I can't say anything else other than amazing" - the student.

Really great story and narration

I had heard about Curious Incident many times but never got round to reading it until I requested recommendations for shorter books to help me finish a reading challenge! It was overwhelmingly recommended and I am not disappointed.

A lovely heartwarming story told from the perspective of a boy with quite specific needs and behaviours. I thought having a child narrator really helped the book and only one small part was made jarring due to the lack of illustrations present in the physical copy. Luckily I own the book and could flick through to get a sense of how Haddon originally conveyed the story. I thought it might grate on me a little, having a child narrator, but given the book's premise it actually helped the story feel more authentic.

The only downside was the weird music... I didnt feel it fit in with the tone of the book and wasn't really needed.

Narrator's voice too young, but overall great!

This is a really lovely, gentle account of life (and an adventure) through the eyes of an Autistic teenager. The story is well narrated, but the choice of picking a child aged 9/10 to recount the story of a 15 year old, was at times frustrating (hence the 3 star rating). Despite that, this is definitely worth a listen.

Great book, odd casting, terrible musak.

Actor playing Christopher sounded a bit young for 15. His parents sounded like luvvies in contrast to everyone else in their world.

Great book to read with kids

Listened to the book with 10 and 12 year olds. Great book and gives a lots of room to discuss difficult topics and how important it is to understand our differences.
