About this listen

Today busyness has become a badge of honour. We want to say we're busy, yet at the same time we feel exhausted. Instead we should start taking rest seriously as a method of self-care, and this book can help us to work out how.

The Art of Rest draws on groundbreaking research Claudia Hammond collaborated on - 'The Rest Test' - the largest global survey into rest ever undertaken, which was completed by 18,000 people across 135 different countries. Much of value has been written about sleep, but rest is different; it is how we unwind, calm our minds and recharge our bodies. And, as the survey revealed, how much rest you get is directly linked to your sense of well-being.

Counting down through the top 10 activities which people find most restful, Hammond explains why rest matters, examines the science behind the results to establish what really works and offers a road map for a new, more restful and balanced life.

Restful listening about rest

A science-backed survey of restful activities, read in a clear and pleasant manner by the author. I really enjoyed listening to this and reflecting on my own resting patterns. Meaningful topic, well executed.

well structured and funny

I’m fascinated in the role of sleep in our waking lives. I learned lots of new information such as how restful reading is perceived to be. Overall, the book was very well structured and a superb read.

excellent

As a Somatic Educator, I really enjoyed learning more about why active rest is important and listen to a few tips and discussions of studies (there are a lot of studies mentioned!). This book is not waxing on about how great restful activities are, but really discusses different aspects of and the historical perspectives on it. Highly recommended if you want to know why reading, gardening, running or watching tv, etc is actually restful.

This is a very long winded literature review!

I was seeking advise on how to relax and got a review on different research on the subject and other related topics. This presented me with the opposite to rest.

Thought provoking

Opened my thinking to the fact that what constitutes rest is different for each person so we need to tailor our own approaches.

I had to slow the narration speed as she spoke at a continuous pace with not much pause for breath and intonation.

Take a rest from rest?

I enjoyed this book, it covers a wide range of ideas, it’s based on research and I will take some ideas from it that I can recommend to clients. What was made clear throughout was the importance of our uniqueness, and as such some things will help some people, and may not help others. Most of the chapters were focussed on left brain activities, ie doing things (I.e.doing mindfulness), and reasons for doing this. I consider rest as ‘not doing’ or moments of idling which many people would not initially be comfortable with because we have been mostly conditioned in a left brain world and so see everything in terms of productivity. I have a sense that Claudia is very productivity focussed also? People as I see it (and I’m no-one special I promise you) need to acquire the ability to ‘not do’ - it is an ongoing project. Overall, a great listen, beautiful voice and very informative. I recommend it.
