Summary
This collection of recordings about Brother Cadfael—a Benedictine monk and amateur sleuth in the 12th century—are performed here by the ideal actor. Sir Derek Jacobi, who portrayed Cadfael in several television adaptations, captivates listeners with his renderings of Monk's Hood, Saint Peter's Fair, The Heretic's Apprentice, The Potter's Field, The Summer of the Danes, and Brother Cadfael's Penance.

Love it
I love the Cadfael stories & Derek Jacobi was wonderful in the BBC adaptations & does a wonderful job in narrating these stories. Cadfael the ex-crusader turned Benedictine monk solving mysteries. This is set in the 12th century & based around Shrewsbury Abbey. You get 6 stories in this collection & at close to 18 hours long is brilliant.

Lovely collection of stories
I really enjoyed this return to the word of Cadfael. Derek Jacobi reading it was a real treat as of course he played Cadfael in the TV series.
There is one oddity, an American (?) continuity chap gave the title of each story before it started. He had some odd pronunciations, especially of Jacobi, going for Jack-Obi rather than ja-kobi. Doesn’t spoil anything though.

Variable
The later tales are much more political and set in the history - so interesting but not quite what I expected.

Derek Jacobi reading his iconic representations of his famous Brother Cadfael personification. Pure magic. No one else can substitute! Ellis Peters writing brought to life.

The atmosphere created. The descriptions of each character. The old worldly way of saying everyday things.

The infinite shades of grey in life that Cadfael negotiates with peace and respect.
I have loved Ellis Peter’s writings since teenage. There is a compassion in the stance that Cadfael takes that is compelling by it’s quiet bravery. In a world that is becoming more polarised it is good to read of an unlikely hero who sees all sides and the path of justice. Derek Jacobi’s interpretation of a character he played so brilliantly is wonderful. Thank you.
