About this listen

The sequel to Jonas Jonasson’s international bestseller The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared

It all begins with a hot air balloon trip and three bottles of champagne. Allan and Julius are ready for some spectacular views, but they’re not expecting to land in the sea and be rescued by a North Korean ship, and they could never have imagined that the captain of the ship would be harbouring a suitcase full of contraband uranium, on a nuclear weapons mission for Kim Jong-un …

Soon Allan and Julius are at the centre of a complex diplomatic crisis involving world figures from the Swedish foreign minister to Angela Merkel and President Trump. Things are about to get very complicated …

Praise for The Hundred-Year-Old Man:

‘A mordantly funny and loopily freewheeling debut novel about ageing disgracefully’ Sunday Times

‘Imaginative, laugh-out-loud . . . a brilliant satire on the foibles of mankind’ Daily Telegraph

Fast-moving and relentlessly sunny Guardian

Nearly gave up - not a patch on the first book

I loved the first book which I read physically. This one had some good parts but far too many long winded passages about current politics. I couldn’t be bothered to listen in places.

I also found the narration unbelievably samey. The same inflexion for almost all sentences. It was boring. The dialogue was much better (Trump aside) but the narrative was plain irritating.

The King of Sweden is a better story if you want a good follow on from the 100 year old man book.

Funny and thought provoking at the same time

Hilarious but sobering story telling of XX- XXI century selfishness, abuse of power, stupidity and ingenuity combined…

A 101 year old Swedish Forest Gump

Ok so maybe Alan is a bit smarter than Forest Gump however they share the same sunny outlook
and boundless optimism. The escapades are by turns exciting and amusing. Great stuff.

Loved it

Good narration. Live the way it goes back in history and keeps up with all modern politics too. I laughed out loud in many places which is unusual for me. Hope there’s another one coming soon

Another great story by Jonas Jonasson

A great interweaving of current affairs and fiction. Excellentportrayals of the characters, who are larger-than-life.

Very enjoyable

I liked the first book very much, so gave the second installment a chance despite some slightly negative reviews. I was not disappointed. The book is a great entertaining summary of the recent political events. I found the characters just as endearing as in the first book, the story just as enjoyable, interspersed with morsels of wisdom. The narration was suoerb as before. I shall definitely listen again.

not as good as the first

was really looking forward to this but it has lost some of the absurdity that the first book had. I think the writer has got too caught up in current events which takes away the timeless property of the book. I did enjoy the descriptions of the various world leaders however I feel my time with Alan is up.

Another rollicking tale

Another thoroughly enjoyable tale of Alan. Humorous and also intelligent. Well read and engagingly delivered.
