About this listen

Three 20-somethings are all that stands between an otherworldly threat and the survival of Earth in the latest thrill ride by Dennis E. Taylor, author of the Audible and New York Times best-selling Bobiverse series.

Jack Kernigan is having a bad day...a bad year...a bad life. After being booted out of MIT, he’s back in his Ohio hometown, working for the family business, facing a life of mediocrity. Then one day, out on a delivery, his truck hits...something. Something big...something furry...something invisible. And, it turns out, something not of this Earth.

Fate can play funny tricks. Which is why Jack suddenly finds himself the planet’s best hope to unravel a conspiracy of galactic proportions that could spell the end of the human race. All Jack and his best friends, Natalie and Patrick, have to defeat an alien threat is their wits, a lot of coffee, and a rather snippy AI named Sheldon. Plus, their own spaceship.

After all, if you’re going to rescue the world, the least you can get out of it is your own spaceship.

Hooked from the beginning

Loved that this story hooks you right in from Chapter 1 with no set up chapters required. One of my favourite ever books and I think the fastest I have ever listened to an audiobook.

Great 'one shot' book plot

Great concept for a story, written with some very comfortable characters.

Maybe not Bobiverse level, 'high' scifi, but a great little story none the less.

A fun, easy listen

Dennis Taylor is a bit of a guilty secret. There are better writers, more complex plots and more gritty settings.

But sometimes I just want a fun, easy listen. Which is why I keep coming back.

So look past the shortcomings, sit back and enjoy this book for what it is.

Another Fab Book by Dennis

As a fan of the Bobiverse series I jumped on this book, especially as Ray Porter was the narrator again too. Gripped from the start and it ended too soon. I hope there’s more to come from Jack, Natalie & Patrick because I really got into their characters A must read/listen for all fans of Si Fi. It has humour, adventure, space and aliens, what more do you wish for!!

Easy and fun entertainment

Started a bit uncertain but quickly moved into good comedy while maintaining a decent suspense.

Good, but no Bobiverse

Aliens visiting Earth is pretty much my favourite form of sci-fi, so I was excited to get into this book by one of my favourite authors. After a while it did get a bit predictable and rather corny, but still kept me interested.

Start and end felt rushed but an enjoyable listen

At first I thought I was going to return this. I really enjoy most other Dennis E Taylor books and Ray Porter is a fantastic narrator but this story seemed rushed to start and the characters were initially flat and unrealistic. It’s as if the character and universe building was edited down significantly.

The ending was also a little deus ex machina but satisfactory.

The middle was fantastic though. Once you get over the first hour and a half, it’s a really solid listen. I specifically like the deliberate lack of mcguffin technologies and Skippy like abilities. It kept the story grounded and problem solving was relatable.
