Summary

Five years ago Corin Cadence's brother entered the Serpent Spire - a colossal tower with ever-shifting rooms, traps, and monsters. Those who survive the spire's trials return home with an attunement: a mark granting the bearer magical powers. According to legend, those few who reach the top of the tower will be granted a boon by the spire's goddess.

He never returned.

Now it's Corin's turn. He's headed to the top floor, on a mission to meet the goddess.

If he can survive the trials, Corin will earn an attunement, but that won't be sufficient to survive the dangers on the upper levels. For that he's going to need training, allies, and a lot of ingenuity.

The journey won't be easy, but Corin won't stop until he gets his brother back.

Trash fantasy but really fun

I really enjoyed this book. It was exciting and fun. You always feel as though the characters are progressing & improving in their skills, part of the reason people love playing RPGs.

It is a book I would be ashamed of telling anyone I had read mainly because the author makes it too much like an RPG. There is so much focus on “levels” & people having 48 mana that I started to cringe. More like playing Diablo 2 than reading a book in the end. I hope the sequels feel more genuine as a story and less focused on the magic system.

A gem of a read

To be honest I wasn’t sure about this book but was intrigued enough to try it. So glad I did. Full of drama, suspense and intrigue. A pleasant surprise and gap filler while waiting for the next in the Spellmonger series. Trouble is now I need to listen to the next in this series as well. What a lovely dilemma.

just can’t get into it

The story just doesn’t allow me to sink into it. Each time a subplot develops that gets the juices flowing, some mishmash of modern day vs Middle Ages magic setting disrupts your thought process.

Excellent listen

This book is different from many fantasy books in the way it is narrated. it took me a chapter or so to get used to it but I'm glad I stuck with it.
Highly recommended.
I bought the second book before I was half way through this one!

Best book i have listened to so far.

What made the experience of listening to Sufficiently Advanced Magic the most enjoyable?

The story was immensely enjoyable and the twists and turns made the book even more intriguing even when they were at school learning it was interesting especially knowing the MC had a threat looming over him that made me feel like i was on edge all the time so i had a hard time stopping. I was awake a lot longer then i should have but it was worth it.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Sufficiently Advanced Magic?

I have to say the end of the book the last twist at the end i did not see it at all. Really made me want to listen to the next book instantly.

What does Nick Podehl bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

He really did the voices well and it was easy to hear the difference between each voice. I really liked the voice of the book and the "gods" he gave them power and character somehow.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

You will always wonder why, who and what while being amazed by the action and well thought story.

Any additional comments?

Really loved it can't wait for the next book!

A wonderfully inventive new Fantasy series.

Sufficiently Advanced Magic is a complete pleasure to read. The characters, world building, magic system and plot are all well thought out.
Once I started I couldn't put it down. I am now eagerly awaiting the next instalment.
