Summary

Inspector Rebus Book 4

Gregor Jack, MP, well-liked, young, married to the fiery Elizabeth - to the outside world a very public success story. But Jack's carefully nurtured career plans take a tumble after a 'mistake' during a police raid on a notorious Edinburgh brothel. Then Elizabeth disappears, a couple of bodies float into view where they shouldn't, and a lunatic speaks from his asylum...

Initially Rebus is sympathetic to the MP's dilemma - who hasn't occasionally succumbed to temptation? - but with the disappearance of Jack's wife the glamour surrounding the popular young man begins to tarnish. Someone wants to strip Jack naked and Rebus wants to know why...

Not my favourite story

However, as I have said in previous reviews of Rebus books, I enjoy listening to James narrating. He does a superb job. Thank you, James for bring the stories to life. Not all narrators can do this.

Great Story

Liked the story line with the twists and Rebus's own instincts often taking him down the wrong track.

The first 4 covered !!!

Having seen an interview with Ian Rankin I decided I'd start from scratch and listen to the whole series. While enjoying this book similarly to the 3rd it is not as well narrated by Samuel Gillies as the first 2 done by James Macpherson (glad to see he is back for the 5th) the first 2 however the story is good with Rebus back in is familiar territory of Edinburgh which is beautifully invoked.

Overall it's OK.

Hmmm...great narrator, not so great storyline

I love James McPhersons narration, in what would otherwise have been a slightly soporific storyline, he held my interest. This is the fourth of the Rebus books I’ve listened to, and the dullest, which is a real shame. Still, it won’t put me off. Onto book number five I go!!

Another Rebus Story

An excellent performance by the narrator. Some of Rankin’s writing is brilliant, but this story has a slightly lack lustre ending - it felt as if it was finished to meet a deadline with a few loose ends left in for a follow up novel.

Great!

Great narration with clear characterisation. As always with a Rebus, an involving & compulsive plot.

Great plot - great characters brilliant classic Rebus

Good sense of difference to life in Edinburgh and the Scottish countryside - nice mix of lowlife and highlife characters with good twists and Rebus at his best and worst - great performance from James McPherson and of course brilliant writing from Ian Rankin
