Summary
It’s the case that could make DS Alex Morrow’s career. A suburban home invaded in the dead of night and a vulnerable old man taken hostage. It’s a black and white case and it shouldn’t be hard to solve….
The two strangers who forced their way into the house demanded millions the family didn’t have and shouted for a man nobody had heard of. It had to be a mistake, and a bad one at that. But Alex Morrow can’t be depended on and the bosses know it. Working this case is tearing her apart and as it unravels, Morrow finds that the only people she can bear to see are the very ones she’s been running from for 20 years.

I adore the narrator
The combination of the author’s story and the narrator make these Denise Mina books so so wonderful. I’ve read some less than nice comments about the narrator and couldn’t agree any less. The narrator commits to every single character more than I’ve ever heard from any narrator before and I enjoy every single second.

Full of intrigue
I really enjoyed this book. It’s well narrated and the story itself is really interesting. I found the protagonist a little hard to like particularly at the beginning but she’s ended up being one of my favourite female detectives. Very excited to pick up the next one in this series.

Comedy Voices?
A good book spoiled by the narrator. When reading a male voice she decends into a Chic Murray parody. It shows how critical it is to have a good reader.

Annoying!
Narration not great. Bannerman and Malky’s voices are not believable. Haven’t been able to enjoy the story because of this.

How could the performance have been better?
Better male voices. Almost caricatured male voices. I thought they were being played for a laugh initially. Quite spoilt what was a very good plot.
Was Still Midnight worth the listening time?

Still Dynamite
I love a crime / police procedural. A lot of crime novels however, seem to share the same flaw: they’re stupid wish-fullfillment for people stuck in dull office jobs. So they glorify a hero who never does any admin because it “gets in the way of the job” or some such; & they feature implausible buffoons in management roles. Denise Mina on the other hand, writes believable characters who relate to each other in complex, interesting, all-too-human ways. Her novels are set in a UK city that’s not London, & have realistically high levels of sardonic humour. There’s an interesting diversity of characters. What could be better. I thought my luck was in when I discovered the Garnethill trilogy a while ago. Now I’ve just started the Alex Morrow series and I’m in a kind of reader’s paradice: everything I liked about Garnethill (almost) is still here. I docked it one star for a bit of implausible plotting right at the end. Special mention for the Audible-book’s narrator: Katy Anderson. She makes this book fizz, with different voices & accents for each character. It’ll take a long time for AI to better Katy Anderson.

Quality
Denise Mina's quality writing is brought to life by the reader in different character styles and with a spattering of humour. The reader seems to have coped well with many different voices and dialects. An enjoyable listen.

Disappointing
Stuck with this although it was a somewhat laboured storyline at times. Finished but felt it had all been rather pointless with a very unsatisfory ending

Narrator was pretty bad...
Stuck with it as good story but all her character accents were way ott and kind of odd. She sounded fine when she was just telling the story but the conversations between characters were just painfully awful at times

If Val McDermid tells you to read something....
What did you like most about Still Midnight?
.....you do! And she was right, I really enjoyed it. Good premise for a story, unfolded nicely with some good twists and turns along the way. Author paints her characters really well - love their patter. Hero is flawed but interesting - and will make a good long term companion. I enjoyed the performance by the reader too. I'm downloading the next book in series now.
