Summary
Leaving behind her forensic pathology practice in South Carolina, Kay Scarpetta takes up an assignment in New York City, where the NYPD has asked her to examine an injured patient in a psychiatric ward. The handcuffed and chained patient, Oscar Bane, has specifically asked for her, and he begins to talk. He says his injuries were sustained in the course of a murder... that he did not commit. Is Bane a criminally insane stalker who has fixed on Scarpetta? Or is his paranoid tale true, and it is he who is being spied on, followed and stalked by the actual killer? The only thing Scarpetta knows for certain is that a woman has been tortured and murdered - and that more violent deaths will follow.

good if you are familiar with earlier books
I really liked this book, and have enjoyed the others. this one does make a lot of reference to happenings in previous books, particularly the one before. I like the psychological aspects to it, and the examination of the characters, their actions, relationships and motivations. For me it makes it more interesting but if you are just looking for a crime novel, and haven't read or listened to the previous books, you may be disappointed.

Very enjoyable
Having read all the previous books in the series this is the first audio version I have listened to. It was gripping, the plot was great, fast-paced and the narration excellent. Would recommend and will be buying the next audio book in the series!

I found this tough going. Not much action at all. Lots of psychalogical umming and arring, I do like these books in general, but I was disappointed with this one.

To much jumping about
this Scarpetta story is jumping too much about, sometimes you lose the plot and don't know where in the story you are. The story is captivating in itself would it not be from the jumping from one scene to another in the middle of a chapter. A little disappointing but still a good story.
