Summary

Does true evil exist in the world? Are people really what they seem?

Abandoned by each of her children’s fathers, Shelley Tremayne’s having a tough time raising six kids alone. When she sees a TV newscast about five boys committing a horrible crime and recognizes her eleven-year-old son Joey in the surveillance camera footage, her life becomes infinitely worse. Although Joey swears he only witnessed the incident, the other boys point to him as the instigator, a charge supported by the evidence. But Shelley simply can’t accept that her Joey could be responsible for such a heinous act.

Shelley and her children can’t return to their grubby home, where their neighbors are waiting to express their outrage. Fortunately, good Samaritans John and Eunice Bolton volunteer to shelter the family at their farm, and offer them the help and caring that they’ve given to so many others in desperate straits. But who will believe Shelley when she discovers that the Boltons are not as kind as they appear?

Cliché

Narrator brilliant, story started quite good, you getting sucked in quite quick with the shock factor but then became quite predictable and a cliché and the ending seemed very rushed. Worth a listen if included in your membership plan, otherwise I'd recommend to skip over this one.

DREADFUL NARRATION

I wanted to listen but the constant and continual intake given of breaths which is SO loud render
ed this audio unlistenable!

This book haunted me long after I had finished it

First, the Narrator often makes or breaks an audible book for me. The Narrator of Refuge was excellent. Okay some of the high pitched whines and taunts were jarring, but I think that was the idea. Most of the time I was totally engrossed in the book, and it continued to haunt me long after I had finished it. Recommended.

A good twist

Good story which makes you think, shocking and harrowing, a good plot twist which isn't predictable but the ending is poor

Not what you expect at all!

Yeah I didn’t expect any of what happened 3 quarters of the way in it totally went a different direction to what you originally thought the story was about

I didn’t not enjoy it it was just a lot! Only thing off putting as well was the narrator doing the boys voices as they all sounded like babies and sometimes Shelly came across that way too

Other than it it’s an interesting listen and does leave you wanting to know what happens after

interesting to imagine the horror

I would have have enjoyed this more with a different narration. The mother's voice doesn't really catch you , enjoyed it regardless, nice twist but predictable .

Keeps you guessing.

I couldn’t stop listening to this. I can usually work out where the story is going, but I had no clue with this one. It’s a depressing subject matter but well written with a robust enough story to keep you guessing.

Had to give up...

The story had potential and I was intrigued to see where it went, but it all felt a bit clichéd when it came to the family set ups of poverty and bad behaviour. However, I had to stop listening because the narrator was so flipping whiney! I found myself loudly saying "Oh shut-up!" to my phone and that's when I knew I had reached my limit!
