About this listen

Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children. But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet.

Darrow - and Reds like him - are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class. Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity's overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society's ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies...even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.

Worth the wait!

This story is a bit of a slow burner at first & not what I had expected, but worth the wait once it gets going in earnest

Bold, brutal and brilliant!

I must admit I hesitated on buying this book as I worried it was a pale imitation of the Hunger Games trilogy. I couldn’t have been more wrong! It gripped me from the start with engaging characters in a dark and divided world. It’s a fast paced journey through a place where anyone can be the enemy and no one can be truly trusted. Highly recommended!

truly phenomenal

Don't waste time reading too many reviews. This is a great book, and you're best going into it with as little spoilers or preconceptions as possible. stick with it for the first few chapters, it's a slow start but this book really nails it home.

Wow. Absolutely absorbing

I came across this book accidentally and seeing it was included in the subscription I thought I’d give it a go. I’m reminded of Dune with its well crafted politics and society. Darrow is Paul and the Reds are the Fremen. It is completely absorbing, listening to it hours at a time. Now that it is finished I am eager to dive into book two of the trilogy. A really great find.

Could not put it down.

Well written and narrated. Fast pace novel. The plot is hard to foresee. Interesting parallel with our own society.
