Summary

When a high-ranking officer gallops into the quiet Mistyvales, he brings a warning that shakes the countryfolk to their roots. But for Aedan, a scruffy young adventurer with veins full of fire and a head full of ideas, this officer is not what he seems. The events that follow propel Aedan on a journey that only the foolhardy or desperate would risk, leading him to the gates of the nation's royal academy - a whole world of secrets in itself.

But this is only the beginning of his discoveries. Something is stirring in the land, something more ominous than the rising threat of hostile nations. Fearful travelers whisper of an ancient power breathing over Thirna, changing it, waking it. In the very heart of these stirrings, Aedan encounters that which defies belief, leaving him speechless with terror - and wonder.

i am so ready for the next book!

Truly does make you wonder. This is a subtle adventure book, its not in your face action, magic and lore. But a simply and effective story with great character building and development. I grew to love the gang in the academy. there are some slow chapters in the middle that definitely could have been 5mins worth of content instead of 20. The introduction of the mysterious in the last quarter of the book has made me extremely excited for the next installment.

Fantastic story

One of very few books I’ve enjoyed several times. Great coming of age story and an engaging protagonist. Nice to have a story where you follow just one character.

Can’t wait for the follow up though I think we are some years away.

Similar ilk to Anthony Ryan in a way. Narrator is excellent as always.

Captivating and exciting.

I read the previous reviews of listeners and wasn't disappointed. I'm a big fan of fantasy fiction and this one is up there with my favourites. I can't wait for the next book already.
The narrator was clear and well paced between detailed scenes and the rush of action. Character's were memorable in his voice and fit the parts well.
I can't describe my most memorable part as it would spoil the book but in one of the main characters defining moments, I had chills.
Go on, give it a listen. You'll be hooked.

Looking forward to the next one!

The story is very interesting and has great depth. I'm very much looking forward to the next one. I don't want to say too much about the book as I don't want to ruin the enjoyment it brings. But you go on a journey with the main characters that take you through the motions of battles, war strategy, fantasy, abandoned cities, and something else... it's all good! A nice book to drift off into another fantasy world.

Fresh take on a classic concept

So in essence this is that classic fantasy story of the simple farm boy who becomes a mighty hero. It does that job excellently, with a well rounded central character and a steady pace.

I found this story's real strength in the detail and thoroughness of its world building and character development. Aidan's journey, both in terms of his adventures and travel across his world as well as his personal and internal struggles are full of heroic success as well as crippling disasters and tragedies.

Though fairly light in tone (not really grimdark this one), the story isn't without its horrors; and although sections of Aidan's training can feel a bit like Harry Potter, there is a much darker tone (though still not quite grimdark), with sections reminding me of my favourite works of other writers; such as Richard K Morgan's 'envoy corps' from Altered Carbon.

I thoroughly enjoyed this title and look forward to the next book in the series.

Thoughtful, fun, terrifying, entertaining. Quality

This is my second review for this boom, after time digesting and thinking back to it I want to let it be known how bloody good this book is. If you are a fan of harry potter or friends that are, give them this book. It's tremendous.
